WHAT A MIGHTY DREAD!

Nagra Plunkett, Assignment Coordinator

WESTERN BUREAU:

It was passion, but not love in Negril Square, Westmoreland, last weekend, when a Rastafarian man took out his anger on a taxi operator and bit off a piece of his tongue.

THE WEEKEND STAR understands that the bizarre act on Saturday evening resulted from a quarrel that escalated into a physical confrontation between the Rasta and the cabbie.

The incident has been confirmed by several persons in the Negril area, some of whom find the act very humorous.

“(The) taxi driver was doing his regular routine of asking passengers if they were heading his direction towards the West End,” a witness told this newspaper.

It is said that the Rasta approached the taxi stand and was asked by the driver if he would be travelling along the West End, Negril route. “Me nah drive wid yuh cause yuh drive too fast and yuh soon dead,” the Rasta is said to have replied curtly.

His response, however, is said to have triggered a verbal attack from the taximan who proceeded to unleash a number of disrespectful remarks towards the Rasta and his mother.

The witness added; “It then turned out that the driver and the Rasta got into a fight and attempts made by the other taxi operators to part the two, proved futile.”

It is understood that the incensed Rasta subsequently grabbed the driver’s throat, which caused his tongue to protrude from his mouth as he was denied oxygen.

It was then that it is said that the rastaman attacked. The small crowd that had gathered are said to have witnessed as the Rasta bit the man’s tongue and spat out a piece on the ground.

Up to press time, the taxi man was hospitalised at the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital.

Checks with Corporal Peter Salkey, Constabulary Communication Network officer for Westmoreland, revealed that he was unaware of the incident.

Efforts to contact the Negril Police Station, which is a mere stone’s throw away from the scene of the fight, proved futile as the three listed telephone numbers for the station went unanswered.

A NEW AND IMPROVED RUFF?

BY FIRE

By Fire
I am dead !
Straight bullet to the head
No one told me survival was illegal
My life was frugal
Crime was the order of the day
With my children I have no time
The fact is I was called a bad man
Due to the laws of a mad man
I will never see the  light of day
My baptism was by fire
I only had a minute to pray
Yet I had so much say
I cannot rest in peace
Until you live in peace
Think twice before you go astray!

JUSTICE NOT POSSIBLE IN JAMAICA!

BARBARA GAYLE, Staff Reporter

The two policemen charged with the murder of the son of dancehall artiste Spragga Benz have been freed.

Constables Audley Lawrence and André Hare were freed yesterday of the murder of 17-year-old Carlton Grant Jr after Supreme Court judge Horace Marsh upheld no-case submissions from defence lawyers Valerie Neita Robertson and Carolyn Reid-Cameron.

The judge said the crown did not present sufficient evidence for him to send the case to the jury. He pointed out that there was no nexus between the policemen and the murder because they were not identified by the sole eyewitness . He said from the forensic evidence there was no proof that the fragment of the bullet recovered from the back off the head of the deceased came from the policemen’s firearms.

The crown, represented by Meridian Kohler, deputy director of public prosecutions, led evidence at the in camera trial in the Home Circuit Court that Grant was unarmed when he was fatally shot on August 23, 2008.

Evidence was given that on the day of the incident Grant and another young man were riding a bicycle in downtown Kingston, when they were stopped by the police. The young men were told to run and while running, the police allegedly fired shots at them. Grant was fatally shot.

Police reports were that Grant and another man were riding a bicycle along Church Street, downtown Kingston, when the police stopped them. The police said shots were fired at them and they returned the fire. The police claimed that Grant was accidentally shot by the man who was travelling on the bicycle with him.
