New Possibly Incurable Gonorrhea Worse Than AIDS

An antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhea—now considered a superbug—has some analysts saying that the bacteria’s effects could match those of AIDS.

“This might be a lot worse than AIDS in the short run because the bacteria is more aggressive and will affect more people quickly,” said Alan Christianson, a doctor of naturopathic medicine.

Even though nearly 30 million people have died from AIDS related causes worldwide, Christianson believes the effect of the gonorrhea bacteria is more direct.

“Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days,” Christianson said. “This is very dangerous.”

“It’s an emergency situation,” said William Smith, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors. “As time moves on, it’s getting more hazardous.”

This gonorrhea strain, HO41, was discovered in Japan two years ago in a 31-year-old female sex worker who had been screened in 2009.

The bacteria has since been found in Hawaii, California and Norway.

Because it resists current antibiotic treatment, the strain has been placed in the superbug category with other resistant bacteria, such as MRSA and CRE.

These superbugs kill about half the people they attack, and nearly one in 20 hospital patients become infected with one, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Though no deaths from HO41 have been reported, efforts to combat it must continue, Smith said.

“We have to keep beating the drum on this,” he said. “The potential for disaster is great.”

According to the CDC, about 20 million a year contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and result in about $16 billion in medical costs. More than 800,000 of STD cases reported are gonorrhea infections, with most occurring in people between the ages of 15 and 24.

Gonorrhea infection rates were at historic lows until two years ago, according to the CDC.

“That’s what’s kind of scary about this,” Smith said. “We are at lows in terms of infections, but this strain is a very tricky bug and we don’t have anything medically to fight it right now.”

Since 1998, the Food and Drug Administration has approved only four new antibiotics of any kind, according to the Infectious Disease Society of America.

The last approval was in 2010. Only seven antibiotics are in an advanced stage of development—still years away from approval and use.

Recognizing the problem, Congress passed a law last year referred to as the Gain Act (Generating Antibiotics Incentives Now) to help speed antibiotic development.

Avoiding the disease completely is the best course, experts said.

“People need to practice safe sex, like always,” Christianson said. “Anyone beginning a new relationship should get tested along with their partner. The way gonorrhea works, not everyone knows they have it. And with this new strain it’s even more important than ever to find out. ”

All superbugs must be dealt with before it’s too late, he said.

“This is a disaster just waiting to happen,” Christianson said. “It’s time to do something about it before it explodes. “These superbugs, including the gonorrhea strain, are a health threat. We need to move now before it gets out of hand.”

Prominent businessman robbed, beaten downtown Kingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Business operators in downtown Kingston are urging the police to carry out speedy investigations into this morning’s incident where a business operator was robbed at gun point.
Reports are that the victim, said to be a brother of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, was at his place of business early Thursday morning when men entered the premises and attacked him.

He was beaten by the men who escaped with an undetermined sum of money.
“Police need to step up their presence in the area this behaviour from criminals is unacceptable,” one angry business operator fumed.
The businessman, who out of fear asked not to be named, was supported by several other people who said the occurence has left them concerned.

A city woman who allegedly crossed the line and mistreated her longtime “friend” will live to rue the day as the goblin went on a rampage causing mysterious fire at her home destroying only her property.

Nkulumane residents had the opportunity of watching an African movie when a mysterious fire started in a plastic bucket and moved from one place to another at Nomsa Khabo’s house;

It is reported that the mysterious fire started on 18 April at around 8am and at first it was only seen by Khabo.

“Khabo is the one who saw the fire burning in a plastic bucket. Surprisingly, she just put out the fire and didn’t seem bothered at all to find out what had caused the fire.

“On the same night, I noticed that her room was on fire again and we woke up some neighbours to help put it out. We realised that there was more to the fire because it was jumping from one piece of property to another,” said the visibly shocked landlord Tembo.

“The fire burnt only Khabo’s property and it did not spread to other rooms despite burning all the electrical wires in her room.

“It seems the fire only ‘wanted’ to destroy Khabo’s property. She lost her bed, wardrobe and clothes. When they put it off at a certain place, it developed somewhere else and if it was a genuine fire, it would have spread to the whole house through electrical wires,” he said.

On Monday morning, when B-Metro visited the family, the suspected goblin was burning up the few things Khabo had been left with. Residents who were gathered at the scene revealed that Khabo had brought a prophet to her place who revealed that a goblin had turned its back on her and was responsible for the mysterious fire.

“In the morning, a prophet came here and prophesied that Khabo had a goblin in the house and it was the one causing the mysterious fire.

“Khabo does not want to talk with you, go back to the people who called you and leave us alone,” said one of the bouncers.

“Unfortunately, the owner of the house said she is a Christian, therefore, they cannot do a cleansing ceremony at her home, Khabo should take all her property and leave,” said a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The landlord’ wife, Esnath Tembo, confirmed that she refused to let the prophet do the cleansing saying: “I am a Christian and the prophet revealed that Khabo has a goblin and a cleansing ceremony should be conducted. I told Khabo to take her things and leave because a ritual ceremony cannot be done at my house.”

When Khabo was followed at a certain house where she had gone with the prophet, she refused to comment on the issue and locked herself in the house sending out two bouncers who chased away the reporters.
