PEPITA NO LONGER ON INTENSE

SHELDON WILLIAMS, Staff Reporter

‘Chica Pepita’

Popular television personality and host of the Television Jamaica(TVJ) entertainment programme Intense the ‘Chica Pepita’ will no longer be associated with the brand. The host and television station parted company yesterday following an altercation with a co-worker sometime last week which led to her departure from the prime time entertainment programme.

“Last week at TVJ, I made an unfortunate decision and allowed my emotions to overpower my better judgement and reacted to a situation and got into an altercation with a fellow co-worker instead of walking away. It was an unfortunate choice that has caused me to lose a job that meant so much to me, but I have to take responsibility and learn from this and move forward,” a statement on Pepita’s Facebook fan page said last night.

The ‘chica’, whose real name is Pepita Little, went on to express sadness at leaving the widely viewed Saturday night entertainment programme for which she has been hosting for the past three years.

She also took the opportunity to show gratitude to her fans whose loyalty and support made her a household name on prime time television.

“To my Intense peeps. I’m writing this post with a very heavy heart because, sadly, I will no longer be the host of Intense. Over the course of the three years, I’ve worked with Intense, you all have shown me so much love and support and for that I thank you! I always felt welcomed everywhere I went – every party, every school,” continued Pepita in her post.

At the same time, her disbelief at leaving the programme was summed up as she posted, “I never dreamt of the day where I would not get to say, this is your Chica Pepita, walk good and live Intense”.

Meanwhile, fans of ‘the chica’ made good on providing encouragement for Pepita as soon as they heard the news.

Likewise,Romayne posted, “Wow ….. Intense meant Pepita Sanjay and Tippa Tip ….. now a missing link ……. sigh!!!!! This replacement has a big shoe to fill … the sky is the limit though …. use this as a push to something bigger for you …. keep sweet and natural with your abilities!!!!! I expect great things,”.

Fans also took to Twitter to share their views.

“No @PepLittle on Intense , no intense for me !!!!! … She IS intense !!!!!!”

When contacted, producer of Intense, Sharon Schroeter, was hesitant to provide details on the incident that cost Pepita her job. However, she remarked, “I’m disappointed at the decision … Pepita is an excellent presenter and I wish her all the best in the future.”

She also cleared the air as the question of a replacement was put to her.

“There’s no immediate replacement at this time,” Schroeter confirmed, but added that viewers should tune in on Saturday to see what happens.

All efforts to contact Pepita proved futile up to press time last night.

I decided to ask each of them how they felt about going into sting and this is what they had to say:-

First is Specialist, his songs are , Street Hustle, and Gallist to name a few

How do you feel about performing at sting this year?

Specialist: It feels great, I am young and just started in the business , Sting is a big thing I want to create a big impact.

What are you doing to create that impact?

Specialist:  I am rehearsing very hard, everyday and you know how sting is, sometimes there is a clash so I am preparing for that too. Anything can happen.

Are you nervous?

Specialist: No man, Im no nervous at all.

I then spoke to Toya, and JMG knows she is

So Toya, since this is your second time at STING  how is it for you?

Toya: STING is great I love performing at STING, it is not for the soft hearted at all. You have to be rough to perform there.

How are you preparing for it?

Toya: Well I have my outfit already, my shoes is here and my outfit is being made, I am practicing a lot also.

How does the outfit look?

Toya: I am going to be in spikes, my outfit will have it as well as my shoes, also Met, please tell the people that I have worked on my belly, I really want them to know I am listening to them so I have worked on it and now its very flat.

What do you think about STING?

Toya: Sting is good, I am not a stage show person but I like sting, the trick to it is that you have to make your performances good and short, I think when it is too long , people get bored and stop listening.

How long is your set?

Toya: My set is around seven to ten minutes

About how many songs?

Toya: I am doing about five songs and I really put work into my act this year. My performanc will be something to talk about (laughs)

STING!

STING

I sit here this morning, writing something I had no intention writing about, why? Because it no longer give me the high it gave back then. Has STING lost it’s STING?

Boxing night was always the night I asked my mother to migrate from my bedroom at the back of the house and sleep in her bed because it was at the front of the house and her window was wide enough for me not to miss anything.

The National Arena was where STING began with Ninja man , the killing Ninja who was expected to win every clash and he never failed to deliver. Right there on spot, he came in with his permit to bury, licensed to kill. Shabba Ranks, Supercat, Flourgon, Junior Demus , not only got killed but all were sent to musical Meadowrest.

The patrons coming home from STING always had something to talk about, even after seeing Ninja Man year after year. In 1990 , with the Ninja Man and Shabba Ranks clash, I really expected to see Shabba in tears, on youtube. It was personal, heart-felt and something to look forward to, as many of the patrons could not explain that it was Shabba’s ego that floated on the ground at STING, instead they said he wanted to cry , and why? Ninja man called him ”dodo pants”. All this I heard from Mommy’s window. STING was something I had to see, and I hated Ninja man because he killed my Dj at the time, Shabba Ranks. I could not stand Ninja Man just for that.

Technology has given me the opportunity to see all that I was too young to see and understand but even now , a brilliant 2011 and over twenty years, Jamaica has not produced such a talent. Ninja Man , manipulated, tenderized his opponent before putting them on his chopping block. They felt uneasy, defeated sometimes by his prancing around the stage, or by his mocking of them. A natural, because he seemed mightily unware  of what he himself did.

It would be easy to dispute that talent needs just the right amount of narcissism, but it does. One has to believe and recognize who they are and never lose sight of that because in doing so the battle will be lost, without an actual war.

Has STING seasoned its STING? This was the show of shows, the root of the grass  that many feared and had to stand a way off, looking. It was the ”poor” people’s Grand Gala. Trench Town, Down Kirk, Rema, Tivoli, Jungle and Back Bush all put aside any turf war they had, to go to the National Arena and watched these men, whose beings sang music. From their facial expressions to the way they moved, it was obvious they were there for more than just the hype. The crowd’s reaction was intoxicating, charismatic almost like a drug. Was this STING?

Yes, I am afraid, it was STING , and it has gone on way after Ninja Man stopped performing because it was really never about him. It was about the music, good music, talented music, intoxicating music ,charismatic music. Raw /natural talent in surplus. Something we don’t have now. Without this, STING will continue to UN-STING

SPEEDY TRIAL ACT FOR BUJU?

Will the speedy trial act help Buju?
BY KARYL WALKER Online news editor [email protected]
Tuesday, December 20, 2011

INCARCERATED Jamaican Reggae star Buju Banton could be freed due to a blunder on the part of the United States Government which failed to bring him to trial before 70 days — a right guaranteed under the Sixth Amendment.
The Speedy Trial Act refers to one of the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution to defendants in criminal proceedings. The right to a speedy trial, guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment, is intended to make sure that defendants are not subjected to unreasonably lengthy incarceration prior to a fair trial.
In judging speedy trial claims, the US Supreme Court has developed a four-part test that considers the length of the delay, the reasons for the delay, the defendant’s assertion of his right to a speedy trial, and the prejudice to the defendant.
Violations of the act, such as where the state has failed to bring the case to trial for an ‘unreasonable’ length of time, may be a cause for dismissal of a criminal case.
Lawyers on behalf of the entertainer last week filed an appeal in a Georgia Court of Appeal citing the violation of the act and that Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, was not guilty of using the wires to facilitate a drug deal and did not conspire with others to distribute cocaine. The lawyers are also arguing that Myrie was entrapped because he did not have a predisposition to participate in a drug conspiracy.
In May last year, US Magistrate James Moody pushed back Banton’s trial date to September that same year without giving any specific reason for the postponement. It was the second time that Moody had pushed back the trial date as he had done so in April last year as well.
On both occasions Buju’s legal team voiced their objection and filed a motion which in part reads:
“Today, on May 28, 2010, the court has again continued the case another 70 days plus until the September trial calendar. No reason has been given for the continuance until September. No findings have been made. Mr Myrie remains incarcerated in the county jail. This is presenting an enormous burden on Mr Myrie, his witnesses, and his counsel. Through this pleading, we demand a speedy trial as required under the act and the constitution.”
Buju Banton was slapped with a 10-year sentence and is now languishing in the Federal Correctional Institution in Miami, Florida.

Mrs Lillian Kirenyi, a legislator from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party was on Tuesday charged with undermining the authority of President Mugabe.

The court was told that the MP committed the alleged offence during an address to party supporters on December 9.

She allegedly said: “Zanu PF (President Mugabe’s party) members been attacking MDC president Tsvangirai alleging he is pro-homosexuals yet Robert Mugabe has practiced homosexuality with (Professor) Jonathan Moyo (former Information minister) and Canaan Banana (Zimbabwe’s first ceremonial president).”

CHRISTMAS FACTS- GOODMORNING

Christmas Facts: Traditions
When thinking about Christmas facts one cannot overlook the number of traditions that surround the holiday. In fact, Christmas in itself, is a tradition. It is a tradition of celebrating the birth or incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ. Overtime, the way in which people have celebrated this day has evolved from culture to culture. However, the one thing each unique cultural celebration has in common is tradition. Everything from stocking stuffers to Christmas trees to family gatherings has been passed down from generation to generation.

There are two types of tradition that each culture carries when celebrating Christmas; religious and secular. The religious tradition is the core or the root of the holiday’s existence and carries much stronger history and stability than those of its counter part. Christians throughout modern time have worshiped the Lord for His coming to humanity in the form of a babe. Though the actual birth date of Jesus is not known (there are strong opinions, like early spring, but no true confirmation) tradition has led to late December or early January as a common and accepted time period for celebrating the most important moment in human history.

Regarding secular traditions one may remember the dilemma of Charlie Brown in the classic Christmas time cartoon by Charles M. Schultz – A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965). His dilemma, answered later by his close friend Linus (as he quoted scripture from Luke Chapter 2), was that the true meaning of Christmas was being diluted by all the commercialization he seemed to find everywhere he looked. What he saw in his world is what we can see in ours every year starting in mid-fall. Over time, Christmas celebrations have grown and become more commercialized and secular. Those in the world who do not connect with the life of Christianity have spurred this on as they continue to observe Christmas for all its joy, togetherness, and tradition; but they simply remove the Christian value and replace it with positive secular imagery and verbalization. They attach no religious value and thus it changes with the whims of every human desire.

Christmas’s purpose, despite its timelessness and generational traditions, can only be maintained in the heart of the everyday man or woman. Each tradition represents something revolving around the incarnation or kingship of Christ. However, if an individual does not choose to attach Christ to the celebration the basic heart and idea behind the said traditions and celebrations change to something methodically capricious. Though much joy and heart-felt connection can still be had, the life blood behind the action is no longer flowing. Therefore, it is important to understand and remember that it is Jesus who brings life to traditions. These then are some of the facts of Christmas and the general meaning behind some of the most common or well known traditions of the holiday.

Christmas Facts: Each Tradition
It’s a birthday party: Luke chapter two describes the birth of Jesus and the start of His earthly life; a life that would lead to the salvation of all mankind. Today, believers recite this chapter and remember, through vivid celebration, the life that Christ has brought them. Christmas is the most important birthday party of all time. It is a celebration that brings, joy, gifts, and the singing of traditional worship songs while feasting with joyous connection to family and friends. It is purely about bringing Him honor and loving those who God has blessed us with.

The Christmas Tree: Originating in Germany, a Fir tree was decorated to represent the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden. The great reformer Martin Luther is said to be the first to decorate the tree prior to the tradition moving to England by way of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It eventually crossed the Atlantic and became an American tradition; though it took some time as it was considered to be a pagan symbol in the earlier years. Today, according to www.christmastree.org, “There are approximately 30-35 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year.”

Santa Claus: A legendary figure who represents the visual dimension of Christmas in our modern age. Santa Claus, in some ways, has over taken the image of Christ in many Christmas traditions and celebrations. His popularity started and grew as the stories of St. Nicholas grew in legend and could only be believed by the young at heart searching for a hero. Today the image of Santa Claus is found in shopping centers, movies, and Christmas time decorations. It is said that Santa Claus has special powers and can tell whether a child has been naughty or nice. Though he is a positive figure, it should be understood, in terms of Christian tradition, that Santa Claus in no way represents Jesus. He was created by man for man. The day still belongs to Christ.

Decorations:

Lights- The many bright lights found hanging on trees and homes around Christmas time means something different for each person who hangs them. For one individual they are simply colorful and joyful — something to brighten up the norm of everyday life in a season of festivities and togetherness. To another, the lights carry spiritual meaning. One such spiritual meaning — purity surrounds the many white lights found on most Christian homes and buildings. The white light stands for the purity of Christ and the heart that lives for Him.

Holly- An evergreen plant representing eternal life is used as a more appropriate Christian decoration in comparison to its counterpart; the Mistletoe. Christians decided to use the Holly plant due to its more positive meaning and a history not tainted by pagan beliefs.

Mistletoe- Used by Druids to celebrate winter and as a symbol of love. It was a pagan symbol because of the belief that it had special healing powers. Its primary purpose today revolves around secular tradition. It is said that if one stands under it they are to be kissed by someone standing close by.

Candles- Tradition says that candles were first used as a Christmas decoration when Martin Luther placed candles on a tree near his home to reproduce a gleaming of light he had seen through the branches of another such tree. Candles also represent the life and light of Christ that shines upon all men. Candles are lit to set the mood for a Christmas time celebration. In churches all over the nation candlelight services are held to sing to the King of Kings in celebration of the life He lived and the salvation He provided to all who believe in His name.

Stockings- Originating in stories of St. Nicholas in which he threw items for young children down chimney’s as he passed by. Those items would fall into the stockings that were hung at the bottom of the chimney. Today, stockings are generally hung above or placed below the fireplace were gifts are place inside for excited little eyes to find on Christmas morning.
Family Feasting: One thing Jesus loved to do when He was on this earth was eat with those He loved. As well, all over the world at Christmas time families feast together in hardy celebration of all things kin. It is a time of laughter, story telling, and reminiscing.

International Traditions: Much of Christmas time celebrations seen in America come from some sort of foreign tradition of old. Each Christian culture around the world provides its own twist on how to celebrate Christmas. The traditions range from the same categories (i.e. music, decorations, festivities and meals) but differ in custom and flavor. Due to the numerous cultures that celebrate the birth of Christ to best know and understand each cultures traditions, specific study should be done.

Carols: In just about every home around the world, Christmas carols and holiday songs, whether explicitly Christian or secular, are heard and sung with wide acceptance. Singing during Christmas is a company event that draws loved ones together. For the individual, carols fill the heart with praise to their Savior and provide feelings of the festive season that bring joy to the heart.

Advent: Though Advent is not a highly well known part of the Christmas season it is a basic and long lasting tradition of the season. The word, in Latin means “the coming.” It is a pre-Christmas preparation for the coming day of Christ’s birth. It is a time of prayer, worship, and fasting. During Advent, families count down the days before Christmas in excited anticipation. However, today’s secular society has used this time as a Christmas shopping period — a massive rush beginning the day after Thanksgiving to buy all the Christmas gifts needed for all friends and family.
Christmas Facts: Traditions Too Numerous to Count
Christmas facts go on and on and the details behind these traditions are too numerous to count. In today’s culture it is best to break down Christmas facts and traditions to one theme – celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus. If the individual heart of man can stay focused on Christ then the worship and honor due His name can still be given in wonderful celebration and tradition each and every Christmas season.
