Generally, persons in the public domain are the subject matter of an Item. Admittedly, some innocent (& not so innocent) bystander whose image is captured by the cameraman may become an Item. But, the vast majority of those featured fall into one of two groups.
On one hand we have the Deejays, their proteges and related followers. The other (and more controversial) group comprises those who deliberately -and strangely- hold themselves out as “celebrities and extra special persons”, who are fully aware of the possibility that what is said and done will end up on facebook, an online entertainment site or the nightly news.Their lifestyle and pronouncements, whether it is along Jamaica Avenue, Queens, NYC or Constant Spring Road, Kingston, Jamaica, W.I., consistently call attention to themselves. What makes this second group different from Joe and Jane Public is that they crave attention. Unfortunately, there are some members of these groups who are not competent to deal with scrutiny.
Yes, Metters do push the limits in their postings. Here, diversity, clarification and serious discussion stand side by side with rumour mongering, cass cass and petty behaviour. Metters are from different social backgrounds, some employed, a few no doubt living the same life as those who are featured in the Items and some are these same “celebrities and extra special persons”. Some are daily bloggers, others seasonal. They do not always agree and sometimes give serious food for thought. But what is wonderful is that the blog always manages to pull through, one Item at a time.
What is key to the growth of a blog is the opportunity to respond. Participants on this blog will on any given day be outraged and for reasons that are obvious – and sometimes for personal reasons. But we must be careful that we do not deny those who we openly & explicitly criticize, the right to respond. And, just as we willingly use colorful terms and phrases in our commentary, we must recognize that others too have that right in responding. Let us not become practitioners of that famous quote from George Orwell’s novel ‘Animal Farm”, that “all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”.
But please, those who wish to clarify any “issues”, it doesnt help to be a bitch about it, it only adds fuel to the fire
