NEW SERIES:”DIRTY & COMPANY” (views please)

 ”Shelly-Ann, yuh hear mi a call yuh little girl”, Pam called as she shook her head in disbelief as to how distant her daughter had become.
Shelly-Ann jumped up from the steps she had been sitting on for the past hour and ran to her mother.
As she approached it was hard not notice the fixation her mother’s eyes had on her rapidly developing body, Shelly too had noticed how wide her hips got and now she walked with a slight sway with her step.
”Come go buy pound and a half of rice round a Shook shop and pass Dassa and buy one tomato and one onion fi mi and hurry up and come back. Mi waa hurry up and cook before Melvin come home.
Saturdays always seemed extra long as Shelly often had to get up her regular 6:00 am and begin the cleaning so that the house would be glistening by the time Melvin got home. Pam, Shelly’s mother whole world seemed to revolve around this man.
Melvin , a tall light skinned man from Lawreston Spanish town had seemed to be Pam’s dream man. He provided for both her and her daughter, by paying the rent and providing everything they needed which allowed Pam not to work.
Pam, a dark skinned chubby one time higgler who no one thought would win a man, now had a dream man at home. A man who didn’t demand anything but time with her daughter on Sundays .
Melvin took Shelly- Ann every Sunday to Devon House for ice-creme, because he was a ” good man”
On the way home from shopping, Shelly-Ann noticed Melvin coming out from someone’s house with a huge grin on his face. This lady Shelly knew had four children and everyone said she was mad.
Quickly hiding behind the column so that she wouldn’t be seen, Shelly began to shake and cry .. Melvin spending time with this lady and her children was definately cutting into her time and her ice-creme time on Sundays!
This could not happen, Shelly looked up to Melvin and that smile made her suspicious as it wasn’t the first time seeing it. ”No dis nah guh suh”.
Shelly waited for Melvin to appear on the corner and stepped out infront of him. Shelly-Ann was a fairly petite girl but had a face that would light up a room, she was that pretty. Melvin’s smile froze as he saw her standing there. ”Yuh want a jockey ride”? Shelly shook her head , ”No mi nuh want no jockey ride, is what you doing ina dat yard”?, ”Nuttin ”, Melvin replied, but after a long pause he said ”A carry mi carry some bongo fi give di children dem, yuh sure yuh nuh want di jockey ride Shelly”?
”Ok”, Shelly replied, ”Yuh have any more bongo lef”?

Around his neck Shelly went, the pre-teen with the angelic face and the swaying hips.
Pam saw them coming and forgot all about the length of time it took Shelly-Ann to return from buying the things she asked her to buy. Melvin made Pam’s day.
”Get up, get up Shelly-Ann come go church”. It was Sunday morning and as usual Shelly-Ann had to go to church, which wasn’t so bad. It was getting up that was the problem. Shelly-Ann got a chance to see her friends that lived in a big house far away but came to church in her area, Wendy , Justine and Nichole. They did everything together on Sundays , shared the same boring Sunday school teacher , Aunty Valrie, sneaked notes in Sunday school, Shelly-Ann had a blast, every Sunday, after she got over getting out of bed.
This week , Wendy promised Shelly-Ann a pair of her heels and Shelly-Ann was looking forward to wearing them. Every girl was wearing heels, but Pam thought Shelly-Ann was too young to start. She was her mom’s pride and joy as Pam could only look at her daughter who had a very striking resemblance to her father, with whom Pam had spent that beautiful night. Xing Wang, he had said his name was and she felt proud she had a beautiful baby girl whom people admired for her looks as well as her milky complexion.
Yes, today was church, Shelly-Ann skipped right next door and waited at the gate for Wendy to come with her bag.

A red Lexus pulled into the church gate, Wendy and her younger sister sat in the back , and as always they were looking out the window. ”Yes mi get it”, Shelly-Ann said, almost aloud!

Not too far away, Martina waited for Mr. Rowe to exit the car , she had no credit to call him so  hand-written note was the next best thing. Wendy, and her sister exited the car and Martina quickly slipped a note towards their dad, who gripped the steering wheel tightly even though he wasnt about to drive.
He nervously said ” thanks” and took the note, only to drop it at the door.
   Wendy and Shelly partners in crime saw when Mr. Rowe dropped the note and quickly stepped on it. The note said ” No period this week, meet regular place”. Martina , who lived five houses away from Shelly-Ann , called Ice-queen by all the men who had wanted to be with her in the area.
    Martina’s skin was dark but she had long black hair almost to her waist. ”What could this note mean Shelly”, Wendy asked. ”Mi nuh know , let wi follow her today and see what she mean”. Shelly-Ann often tried to speak as well as Wendy although she knew some of the words were wrong, at least she fit in somewhat.
Martina often came to church with half of her very perky breasts exposed , one sunday in particular, the Pastor’s wife had to give her the cloth that was spread on the alter to cover up. ” No period this week”, what could that mean the girls thought, Wendy’s mother was often absent from church and often said she was too busy to mingle with hypocrites.

GOODMORNING!

Psalm 45

Psalm 45[a]

   .

 1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme
   as I recite my verses for the king;
   my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

 2 You are the most excellent of men
   and your lips have been anointed with grace,
   since God has blessed you forever.

 3 Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one;
   clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.
4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously
   in the cause of truth, humility and justice;
   let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.
5 Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies;
   let the nations fall beneath your feet.
6 Your throne, O God,[c] will last for ever and ever;
   a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
   therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
   by anointing you with the oil of joy.
8 All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;
   from palaces adorned with ivory
   the music of the strings makes you glad.
9 Daughters of kings are among your honored women;
   at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.

 10 Listen, daughter, and pay careful attention:
   Forget your people and your father’s house.
11 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;
   honor him, for he is your lord.
12 The city of Tyre will come with a gift,[d]
   people of wealth will seek your favor.
13 All glorious is the princess within her chamber;
   her gown is interwoven with gold.
14 In embroidered garments she is led to the king;
   her virgin companions follow her—
   those brought to be with her.
15 Led in with joy and gladness,
   they enter the palace of the king.

 16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
   you will make them princes throughout the land.

 17 I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;
   therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.

JIM BROWN- WHAT WE DIDNT KNOW

Every two weeks an article will be written about the ”Dons” that have passed. Much of the knowledge we have is based on what we hear, much of which is watered down.

‘Jim Brown’ Is Still Dead, Isn’t He?

Outside the Kingston courthouse, lawyer Tom Tavares-Finson smiled sarcastically behind his racing-driver sunglasses last week. A coroner’s inquest had just given up trying to decide how and why Tavares Finson’s client, the “don dadda” (father don) of West Kingston’s gangland slums, died. “If you believe Jim Brown just burned to death, by accident, in his jail cell, you’ll believe in the tooth fairy,” said the lawyer. “The only thing I can tell you for sure-and I saw the body-is that Jim Brown is dead.”

And so, it would seem, is Lester Lloyd Coke, as Jim Brown was identified in dozens of U.S. and Jamaican police files. Still, on walls all around Kingston, the graffiti say FREE JIM BROWN, the alias he rode to the top of the Jamaican capital’s drug -fueled slums. To his friends, Brown was a hero who rose above the despair of Jamaica’s ghettos. In Kingston’s slums, he was a key enforcer for former prime minister Edward Seaga’s Jamaica Labor Party; Seaga himself called Brown the “protector” of Kingston’s poor, and helped lead the don dadda’s funeral. But to local police-who had tried, and failed, to pin 14 separate murder charges on him– Brown was the most influential of the city’s gangland bosses. When he mysteriously burned to death late last month in a maximum-security cell, Brown was within days of being extradited to face U.S. murder and drug-racketeering charges; suspicions ran high that he was silenced because he knew too much.

Guns swept into Jamaican ghetto politics in the mid-1970s. That is when Kingston’s worst slum areas—places with names like Concrete Jungle, Dunkirk, Trenchtown and Jim Brown’s own Tivoli Gardens-were carved into so-called “garrison constituencies,” controlled, Chicago style, by shifting hierarchies of local bosses for both leading parties. Jamaican involvement in the 1980s cocaine boom increased the power of the bosses. “The dons have their own power base now, their own money and their own guns,” says Kingston sociologist Carl Stone, “while the politicians still need them and the votes they control.” In his farewell speech to Parliament last week, Prime Minister Michael Manley warned against the dangers of “political tribalism.” But talking later with reporters, he also conceded that the dons are not going to disappear, so long as politicians fail to do anything about the slum conditions that breed them.

Jim Brown in particular made himself larger than life. Starting with the alleged 1984 rub-out of seven Labor Party defectors, he built the image of an untouchable. Nominally a construction contractor, Brown, U.S. lawmen say, ran the Kingston end of the Miami-based Shower Posse, notoriously violent East Coast-based Jamaican drug-distribution gang. He burnished a Robin Hood image by using the proceeds from local drug sales, stolen passport rings and protection rackets to dole out everything from community centers to school money for kids and burial suits. And there was a lot of burying to do. Jim Brown’s oldest son 24-year-old Mark (Jah T) Coke, apparently slain by rival drug traffickers, was buried on the day Brown himself died; a daughter was shot and killed last year. “They pay such a terrible price and yet no one even tries to stop it,” says Msgr. Richard Albert, an American priest who has worked in Kingston’s slums since 1976. “I did a funeral where one of the guy’s girlfriends comes along with a flower arrangement in the shape of an M-16. You can’t go on glorifying killers.”But last week’s open verdict on Jim Brown’s death may only fuel his myth. It is hard to explain how a jail cell could suddenly burst into deadly flame. Or why it took at least 15 minutes after the first alarm until his cell door could be released. Or why it took nearly two hours to get him to a hospital that is minutes away. During the inquest, one prisoner broke down and claimed he had been pressured to cover up for wardens who deserted their posts as Brown’s cell burned. The only certain thing is that the body was Brown’s. Though the face and chest were badly burned, the fingerprints were clear. The assumption in Kingston is that friends in the Shower Posse decided that he would be a better dead myth than a live witness in Florida.

In the Baltimore Bar on Jim Brown’s ghetto turf, a man with a bullet-scarred nose drags on a ganja pipe and says: “When the time is right, there’ll be another don dadda. There always is.”Up at the fashionable Wyndham Hotel, where heavyweights of the ruling People’s National Party lined up last-minute support for Manley’s successor, deputy party leader P. J. Patterson, Brown’s lawyer is sitting near the bar. “They say Jim is in Panama. Or is it Peru?” he smiles. “Well you can say this: Jim’s very amused, wherever he is. That’s the kind of guy he is.” Outside on the street, a cabdriver says: “He’s still dead, isn’t he?”

GOODMORNING

– God’s Love For Us
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands. – Deuteronomy 7:9

For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. . . – Psalm 37:28

I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. – Proverbs 8:17

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. – 1 John 4:9-11

– Love for God
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. – 1 John 4:16

We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. – 1 John 4:19-20

This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. – 1 John 3:10

No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. – Matthew 6:24

So be very careful to love the LORD your God. – Joshua 23:11

I love you, O LORD, my strength. – Psalm 18:1

Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ – Matthew 22:37-39

– Love for One Another
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. – Proverbs 17:17

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. . .And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. – excerpts from 1 Corinthians 13:4-13

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. – John 15:12-13

‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. – Leviticus 19:18

Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs. – Proverbs 10:12
