Kimani Gray, 16, was killed by police after cops say he pulled out a gun. Gray was a student at the Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction.
The principal of Kimani Gray’s Manhattan school conveyed deep sorrow at having lost the 16-year-old sophomore, who was fatally shot in Brooklyn by two NYPD cops.
“Our entire school community pours our heart out to Kimani Gray’s mother and family,” Matthew Willoughby, principal of the Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction, wrote in a heartfelt letter sent home to parents.

Carol Gray, mother of Kimani Gray, 16, killed by police after he allegedly pulled a gun, talked about the lingering doubts about the police story.
“We miss Kimani as we know they do in an unimaginably painful way.”
Willoughby wrote that Kimani was committed academically – and traveled for more than an hour to get to the school, on W. 50th St.

Sergeant Mourad Mourad was one of the police officers involved in the shooting death of Kimani Gray, 16, in East Flatbush on March 9, 2013.
“Kimani made great strides this year academically,” the letter read. “He was taking an extra English class after school; he was writing a dramatic dialogue in another English class; his group in Design class was working on a project to design a school.
“Now they are working to complete the project without him,” he added.

While the school community was saddened by the shooting, which happened on March 9, Kimani’s death also incited mass riots in Brooklyn for three straight nights. The street battles that ensued resulted in nearly 50 arrests.
Cops have said the East Flatbush teen was a member of the Bloods street gang.
But instead of focusing on the negative aspects, Willoughby encouraged students and staff to remember Kimani “for all of who he was – an energetic, kind, playful, independent young man who was trying to learn and grow one day at a time.”

CATHY LEVY
Still a kid at heart
Cathi Levy’s road from beauty queen to mentor
BY RICHARD JOHNSON Observer senior reporter [email protected]
Sunday, March 17, 2013
THIS is a year of anniversaries for theatre practitioner and former beauty queen Cathi Levy.
It was 30 years ago that she beat 19 other beauties to take the Miss Jamaica World title. She would go on to the Miss World contest later that year and finished fourth.
LEVY… I wanted to offer youngsters an opportunity to express themselves on stage like had never been done before in Jamaica

This year also marks 25 years since Levy launched her ground-breaking performing arts troupe, the Cathi Levy Little People and Teen Players Club.
Adding to the special year is an honour from the Actor Boy Awards (ABA).
Come March 25, Levy will be the special honoree at the awards ceremony organised by the International Theatre Institute (Jamaica Centre) which recognises excellence in local theatre.
“I am truly humbled… I consider it a huge compliment and I am so appreciative,” Levy says of the award, which will see her joining the likes of actors Leonie Forbes and Oliver Samuels, the School’s Drama Festival and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts as special ABA honorees.
Levy, who prefers to stay out of the spotlight, is reflective when asked about her proudest moments in theatre.
“I would have to say I am proud of training a whole generation… my ‘children’ are all grown and staking their claim in the world of entertainment.”
Levy stays clear of calling the names of her ‘children’ — former members of her Little People and Teen Players — noting that it is like naming a favourite child. She adds that the list is long and diverse.
Among the former members of her troupe are music lecturer and performer Michael Sean Harris, singers Duane Stephenson and Tami Chynn, the members of To Isis, past and present members of the National Dance Theatre Company as well as individuals who have performed in Broadway productions.
Levy said she created the troupe in order to fill a void which had existed in her own life as a child.
“I have always focused on children as there was nothing like Little People when I was growing up and I wanted to offer youngsters an opportunity to express themselves on stage like had never been done before in Jamaica… and I saw these kids grow.”
Although it was based on her initial concept, Levy credits the support of a group of associates including Julie Harris, Paulette Bellamy, Peter Ashbourne, Nancy McLean, Jon Williams, Greg Thames, Vincent Chin Penn and Paul Hamilton for guiding the troupe.
After nearly a decade, the Little People and Teen Players Club hit a snag. Many of the experienced members left to become part of the Ashe Performing Arts Ensemble.
Levy refers to this period as “painful but necessary”.
“It is said when the Lord closes a door he opens a window, well he opened another door. As having lost some of the more experienced performers we were able to transform the members from good to great. We diversified our training to include music appreciation, established a band, introduced other forms of dance including jazz, folk, and tap, and embraced other forms of entertainment including magic.”
But that period is fully behind Levy now. She has embraced some of those ‘breakaway’ members who have come full circle and are working with her on her new production set to open in April.
“It’s called Imagine — Not magic, but magical,” she gushes as her voice raises a few octaves. “It’s a kaleidoscopic, theatrical experience in black light, and we are working with Jeremy Thorpe who works on Disney productions in Florida.”
The ambitious production will run from April 19-28, two weekends and 11 shows featuring 14 works in mime, puppetry, dance, sign language, mosaic puppetry and clowning.
Her cast of 30, ranging in ages from 13-15 includes 11 deaf children.
“It is all about highlighting the excellence of these individuals who are often overlooked,” she notes. “The show grants full access to the deaf and hearing impaired but does not mitigate the impact it will have for the hearing. It’s purely for fun and will transport audiences from the mundane for two hours leaving them happy.”

DEAD PIG NUMBERS INCREASE IN CHINA
BEIJING (AP) — The number of dead pigs retrieved from waters in and near China’s financial hub of Shanghai has reached 12,566.
Authorities in Shanghai plucked 611 dead pig carcasses Saturday from Huangpu river, which provides drinking water to the city’s 23 million residents. In total, 8,965 dead pigs have been found in the river since March 8.
The swollen and rotting pigs are largely believed to be from the upstream city of Jiaxing in neighboring Zhejiang province, but Zhao Shumei, a deputy mayor, said it was inconclusive to say all the pigs were from her city.
Jiaxing — where small hog farms are prevalent — reported Friday night that it had recovered 3,601 dead pigs from its streams, according to state media.
The head veterinarian for China’s Agriculture Ministry, Yu Kangzhen, who has traveled to the region to investigate the deaths, told state media Saturday that there has been no major swine epidemic, but said some samples tested positive for the common porcine circovirus and the epidemic diarrhea virus.
Yu also said cold weather and fluctuating temperatures have caused a spike in deaths among baby pigs.
Villagers have told state media that pig dumping is on the rise following police campaigns against the illicit trade of pork products harvested from diseased pigs that were illegally sold, instead of properly disposed of.
In Shanghai, authorities have repeatedly assured residents that tap water is safe, but locals remain worried about water contamination.
In 2012, about 130,000 Jiaxing hog farmers raised more than 7 million pigs, according to state media.
WTF AFRICA- WOMAN DIES IN HER SLEEP, TWO DAYS AFTER WEDDING
Tragedy struck in Effurun, near Warri, Delta State on Thursday, when a bride-to-be, Ejiro died in her sleep. The sad incident occurred two days to her wedding.
Ejiro, a graduate of chemistry from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), sources said had her traditional marriage on Wednesday and had complained after the marriage of slight headache to her parents who told her to take some medications.
However on Thursday night, she allegedly started talking more than usual and created panic among her family members, who rushed her to a nearby church, where the pastor prayed for her. She died later that same night. Prior to their traditional marriage, there were fierce squabbles between the family of the bride and the groom over inexplicable issues as the mother of the groom allegedly vowed to make life unbearable for the bride.
On several occasions, she was said to have discouraged her son from marrying the girl; as a result of which the traditional marriage was done amid disagreements.
The groom, a medical doctor, had reportedly been having running battles with his parents especially his mother, who allegedly described the bride to be saucy and disrespectful vowing to frustrate the marriage. Sources had it that the bride’s parents were pressured to cancel the wedding, especially as it was clear that the groom’s mother was not in support of it, but went ahead after the lady in question threatened to kill herself if she were not allowed to marry the doctor.
With palpable tension currently rocking both families, the late bride’s mother-in-law in the early hours yesterday allegedly confessed to be responsible for her death, an act which left neighbours including onlookers in confusion, while some policemen and family members were seen discussing the issue.
According to eye witnesses, a woman from Isoko North extraction sudden outburst attracted neighbours to the scene, where she allegedly confessed to have killed the bride in her coven through headache.
