WITH the recent revelation that desperate scammers are blackmailing members of the public who post sexually explicit photographs on their computers and mobile phones, the police Cyber Crimes Unit has issued an advisory warning of the dangers of the practice.
The following is the advice from the police:
A cybercrime is the use of any digital device (computers, mobiles and or smartphones) over the internet to commit a crime such as:
Unauthorised access to any private or public data (email, personal information etc.);
Identity theft;
Distributed denial of service (DDOS);
Attacks against a person, property or government; and
Using malware/virus/spam or any forms of destructive and disruptive software or malicious action nationally or internationally.
CYBER-SECURITY TIPS & AWARENESS
Vulnerability and cyber-security in today’s world affects everyone in this day and age of borderless communication.
As citizens of a digital world and global communication village, we must start doing the following:
Always password-protect your computer systems private or public, wireless or wired;
Always use an alpha-numeric password format;
Never store password carelessly;
Always ensure system firewalls are active to prevent unauthorised system-access;
Avoid placing too much personal information on social networks;
At best, internet use must be closely monitored at all times;
Do not be lured into browsing or downloading from attractive web-pages/sites such as: – financial, sex, games, lottery, cookies; and
Never, never click on internet links you are NOT certain about. Your network, your computer or you may become a victim of a detrimental attack.

Personal information eg. workplace, status, home address are never to be posted in comments. 4. Do not deliberately LIE on someone here or send in any information based on your own personal vendetta. 6. If your picture was taken from a prio site eg. fimiyaad etc and posted on JMG, you cannot request its removal. 7.
