GOODMORNING

Charitable Giving – The Heart of Giving
When it comes to charitable giving, Americans are the most generous people in the world. Even in a difficult economic year like 2002, charitable giving still rose .5% to $241 billion. In fact, charitable giving was 2.3% of the U.S. GNP, exceeding 2% for the first time since 1971. Remarkably, this increase came after the greatest two-year equity market decline in U.S. history.

Citizens of all income levels respond quickly and generously when they’re convinced of a true need. Initially, donors respond from their heart because of a desire to help others in need. This emotional response can generate a widespread outpouring of small gifts, like it did following the 9/11 tragedy. Over $1 billion was given by private individuals within one week of the terrorist attacks. Only a month later, the outpouring of individual gifts dried to a trickle. For individuals to keep giving or to give at a larger level requires an intellectual connection to the emotional draw. In a nutshell, sustained giving requires confidence on the part of the donor.

Charitable Giving – The Mind of Giving
With respect to charitable giving, what does it take to give with confidence? How do we get past the skepticism that the money we give won’t have the impact we desire? Well, confidence requires verified information. In biblical terms, we call this accountability and stewardship on the part of the donee organization. Donors are often hesitant to ask questions and erase doubts for fear of coming across as prying – telling the organization how to lead or operate. These givers lack confidence, but they choose to give anyway for a variety of reasons.

If a gift is used to help fund a capital project, the donor can see some tangible results, and therefore has some confidence in the gift’s impact. However, gifts for general operations can be a whole different story. One of the largest gifts in U.S. history was $1 billion given by Walter Annenberg to improve education in the public schools. Sadly, a recent study conducted by the Annenberg Foundation stated that there’s been “no measurable impact on the quality of public education as a result of the $1 billion gift.”

What happened in this case? What was the measure of success? Was a desired impact determined before the gift was given? The key for larger donors is to invest some time and resources in carefully evaluating donee organizations, so they can increase their confidence and properly structure the gift. The donor should meet with the recipient organization before giving the gift to define the desired impact, reporting benchmarks, and measurements for “success.” Donors making sustained pledges or multi-year grants may want to make proper reporting a condition for continued funding.

Charitable Giving – The Joy of Giving
Charitable giving is a gift – physically, emotionally and spiritually. First and foremost, it’s a matter of the heart. The only motivation for giving should be the gracious gift itself. As Winston Churchill said, “You make a living by what you make, you make a life by what you give.” In the Bible, we learn that God loves a “cheerful giver” (II Corinthians 9:7). In fact, the Greek word used in that scripture is where we derive the word “hilarious.” Obviously, God wants us to enjoy the gift of giving!

As a wise steward of God’s resources, the only thing better than a cheerful and generous giver is being a confident, cheerful and generous giver. Being confident in your giving involves time, wisdom and discernment. Confidence in the gift’s impact is the key to experiencing the true joy of generosity.

Jahvinci splits from the Portmore Empire

Dancehall singjay Jahvinci has announced his intention not to re-sign a booking or recording contract with the Portmore Empire.
“I want the world to know that I am no longer managed by Vybz Kartel and the Portmore Empire,” the statement said.
It continued: “In all honesty, it was a great learning experience but the BEST decision is for me to move on given the musical direction that the Empire has been moving in for quite some time. I appreciate the support that Vybz Kartel has given me as a mentor but at this stage in my career, I want to move in a different creative direction with my choice in management. I will now be managed by
Corey Todd, and my road manager will be Milla 9.”
Jahvinci is known for the #1 hits Watch Yu Friends and Rich. However, in recent times, Empire fans believe that his career has been on a downward spiral.
“There were certain things going on in the Empire that I did not agree or condone but all that is in the past I am excited about the possibilities and I know that this is the start of a great journey in my career. I want to deliver my message of peace and unity to my reggae fans. I have to keep moving forward no matter the obstacles that stand in front of me,” the statement said.
“I want to thank the fans for their undying support. I look forward to what the future may bring.” TO CONTACT Jahvinci, email [email protected]

INDIA’S UNWANTED GIRLS

India’s unwanted girls

A baby's hand rests on a woman's hand

India’s 2011 census shows a serious decline in the number of girls under the age of seven – activists fear eight million female foetuses may have been aborted in the past decade. The BBC’s Geeta Pandey in Delhi explores what has led to this crisis.

Kulwant has three daughters aged 24, 23 and 20 and a son who is 16.

In the years between the birth of her third daughter and her son, Kulwant became pregnant three times.

My mother-in-law said if I had a daughter, my husband would leave me. Thankfully, I had a son.”

Deepali SahHealth worker

Each time, she says, she was forced to abort the foetus by her family after ultrasound tests confirmed that they were girls.

“My mother-in-law taunted me for giving birth to girls. She said her son would divorce me if I didn’t bear a son.”

Kulwant still has vivid memories of the first abortion. “The baby was nearly five months old. She was beautiful. I miss her, and the others we killed,” she says, breaking down, wiping away her tears.

Until her son was born, Kulwant’s daily life consisted of beatings and abuse from her husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law. Once, she says, they even attempted to set her on fire.

“They were angry. They didn’t want girls in the family. They wanted boys so they could get fat dowries,” she says.

India outlawed dowries in 1961, but the practice remains rampant and the value of dowries is constantly growing, affecting rich and poor alike.

Kulwant’s husband died three years after the birth of their son. “It was the curse of the daughters we killed. That’s why he died so young,” she says.

Girl Power

How girls are valued varies widely across India. Over the years, most states in the south and north-east have been kind to their girls, and sex ratios are above the national average.

In the matrilineal societies of Kerala and Karnataka in the south and Meghalaya in the north-east, women have enjoyed high status and commanded respect. But the latest census figures show the good news even in these areas could be turning bad. A minor decline in the number of girls has begun in the three states which, campaigners worry, might be indicative of a trend.

What is seen as most distressing is the steep decline in the number of girls under seven in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh and in Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura in the north-east. Even though these states have registered numbers much higher than the national average, the decline is too substantial to ignore.

But all is not lost. Some states, such as Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh – which saw the gap between numbers of boys and girls widen in 2001 – have shown an improvement. That is cause for some cheer, campaigners say.

Her neighbour Rekha is mother of a chubby three-year-old girl.

Last September, when she became pregnant again, her mother-in-law forced her to undergo an abortion after an ultrasound showed that she was pregnant with twin girls.

“I said there’s no difference between girls and boys. But here they think differently. There’s no happiness when a girl is born. They say the son will carry forward our lineage, but the daughter will get married and go off to another family.”

Kulwant and Rekha live in Sagarpur, a lower middle-class area in south-west Delhi.

Here, narrow minds live in homes separated by narrow lanes.

The women’s story is common and repeated in millions of homes across India, and it has been getting worse.

In 1961, for every 1,000 boys under the age of seven, there were 976 girls. Today, the figure has dropped to a dismal 914 girls.

Although the number of women overall is improving (due to factors such as life expectancy), India’s ratio of young girls to boys is one of the worst in the world after China.

Many factors come into play to explain this: infanticide, abuse and neglect of girl children.

But campaigners say the decline is largely due to the increased availability of antenatal sex screening, and they talk of a genocide.
