WHA GWAAN???? JAMAICAN STEP PARENTS TUN KILLA NOW?
The parents of 10-year-old Shakeil Boothe have been remanded in custody after facing charges in the Brampton boy’s death.
Garfield Boothe, 31, was charged Monday with second-degree murder after his son’s lifeless body was found inside the family’s Homeland Ct. home last Friday.
On Tuesday he was ordered to face a video link hearing in Brampton court on June 14. He must apply to Superior Court for a bail hearing at that level.
He is also charged with failing to provide the necessities of life.
About 90 minutes earlier in the same courtroom, his wife, Nichelle Boothe-Rowe, 28, stepmother to young Shakeil, was charged with manslaughter. Justice of the Peace Thomas McKeogh ordered her to return for another hearing on June 8.
Dressed in a dark green jail-issue sweatshirt and track pants, Boothe-Rowe stood silently in the prisoner’s dock, her hands cuffed in front of her.
Boothe, dressed in a short sleeve navy shirt with grey piping and grey sweat pants, sat impassively for about 20 minutes as court officials tracked down his lawyer, Luc Leclair.
Both Boothe and his wife were ordered to have no contact with each other, except through their lawyers.
Leclair said outside the court that Boothe was “upset” by the charges.
“It’s a difficult case,” he said. “It’s an upsetting case for probably everyone involved, for sure.
“This case is not what it appears to be,” Leclair added, but declined to explain what he meant.
A publication ban was imposed by McKeogh on evidence at both hearings.
Boothe had told neighbours in his quiet neighbourhood near Dixie Rd. and Howden Blvd. that he’d brought his young son to Canada from Jamaica about two years ago to give him a better life.
Shakeil was found dead last Friday in the two-storey brick and siding home where he lived with his father, stepmother and an 8-month-old half-brother.
It was Peel’s eighth homicide this year.
Investigators wouldn’t say how the youngster died, but a police source said Shakeil had been severely beaten.
The source also said the child’s injuries went unreported for two days.
The couple’s baby has been taken into care by the Children’s Aid Society.
