Zimbabwe’s president reportedly labels J’can men as drunkards always high on the weed
A media entity in Zimbabwe has reported that the country’s president, Robert Mugabe, has taken an unprovoked swipe at Jamaica and, in particular, Jamaican men.
In an online article posted last Friday on the website of Nehanda Radio, a Zimbabwean radio station, Mugabe, who was conferred with the Order of Jamaica during a state visit to the island in 1996, is quoted as labelling Jamaican men as drunkards who are perennially high on marijuana.
According to the report, the controversial Mugabe made the comments during a ‘distinguished lecture’ at a university function dubbed ‘Research and Intellectual Expo 2012’.
The Nehanda Radio story speculated that the 88-year-old Zimbabwean strongman may have stoked a diplomatic tiff with Jamaica by describing the island as “a country of marijuana smokers, where women are now taking charge since men are always sloshed (drunk)”.
According to the article, Mugabe, who neither smokes nor drinks alcohol, urged Zimbabweans never to follow in the footsteps of Jamaicans, whose influence on the country is all too pervasive.
FREE TO LIGHT UP
Even though marijuana is illegal in Jamaica, the Nehanda Radio reported that Mugabe said that Jamaicans are free to light up spliffs.
“In Jamaica, they have freedom to smoke mbanje, varume vanogara vakadhakwa (men are always drunk) and universities are full of women,” the article reports Mugabe as saying.
“The men want to sing and do not go to colleges vamwe vanobva vamonwa musoro (some are dreadlocked). Let us not go there,” Mugabe is quoted as saying.
The article also noted that “the Zimbabwean leader, who is battling a negative international projection from Western countries over alleged human-rights abuses, said the levels of abuse of drugs in Zimbabwe are low, save for a people who he said ‘drink on behalf of others'”.
Mugabe is also reported as urging universities to build God-fearing students.
The article further noted that despite the fact that Jamaican reggae anddancehall artistes have trooped to the southern African country heaping praises on the Zanu PF leader, Mugabe is not flattered.
The report stated that Mugabe’s stance was shocking when held against the backdrop of “the numerous praises from Jamaican artistes such as Sizzla, Red Rat and the legendary Bob Marley, who graced the country’s independence celebrations in 1980”.
“At the invitation of the late Zanu PF former secretary general, Edgar Tekere, the reggae godfather bankrolled his trip and left Zimbabweans awed by his song Zimbabwe,” read another section of the article.
“In recent years, there has been an influx of young Jamaican dancehall and reggae superstars, who have been given the red carpet by Mugabe’s government and, in return, have showered praises on,” said the report, which was not corroborated by any of the major international news organisations.
However, some reputable international news organisations are banned from broadcasting from Zimbabwe.
GOOD RELATIONSHIP
Mugabe’s government in Harare has always enjoyed a good relationship with Kingston following the work of then Prime Minister Michael Manley in 1979.
Manley was instrumental in meetings with Joshua N’Komo and Robert Mugabe in London in a flurry of diplomatic briefings on the constitutional talks on the future of Zimbabwe and Rhodesia.
During his visit to Jamaica in 1996, Mugabe was hailed as a courageous leader as he accepted the Order of Jamaica on behalf of the people of Zimbabwe.
During that visit, Mugabe met with a delegation of Rastafarians in a meeting that was punctuated by prayers, chants and the blowing of horns, as he was hailed as a great leader of Africa in the tradition of National Hero Marcus Garvey.
More recently, Sizzla found himself in an international controversy in 2010 when he performed at Mugabe’s 86th birthday celebrations.
“I see him as one of my fathers from Africa,” Sizzla said of Mugabe.
“He’s part of my nation, the black nation. In all that he’s done – whether it’s good or bad – I hope and pray that it’s for the betterment of the people,” said Sizzla in response to his critics.
Late yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister A.J. Nicholson told The Sunday Gleaner the Government was aware of the report but not yet in a position to comment.

In the meantime, Minister Nicholson says:
“We strongly reject the suggestions contained in the news item. Jamaica is a nation characterized by adherence to democratic principles and the rule of law.

The Minister’s comments follow an article in the national press carrying quotes that have been attributed to the President of Zimbabwe.
RIHANNA DABBLING IN HOLLYPAGANWOOD
Isis: Mother Goddess of Ancient Egypt
A number of contemporary Pagan traditions have adopted Isis as their patron Goddess.
Mistress of Magic:
Isis (called “Aset” by the Egyptians), a daughter of Nut and Geb, is known in Ancient Egyptian mythology as a goddess of magic. Wife and sister of Osiris, Isis was originally considered a funerary goddess. After her resurrection via magic of Osiris, who had been killed by his brother Set, Isis was considered “more powerful than a thousand soldiers” and “the clever-tongued one whose speech never fails.” She is sometimes invoked as an assistant in magical rituals in contemporary Wicca.
The Love of Isis and Osiris:
Isis and her brother, Osiris, were recognized as husband and wife. Isis loved Osiris, but their brother Set (or Seth) was jealous of Osiris, and planned to kill him. Set tricked Osiris and murdered him, and Isis was highly distraught. She found Osiris’ body within a great tree, which was used by the Pharoah in his palace. She brought Osiris back to life, and the two of them concieved Horus.
Depiction of Isis in Art and Literature:
Because Isis’ name means, literally, “throne” in the Ancient Egyptian language, she is usually represented with a throne as a depiction of her power. She is often shown holding a lotus as well. After Isis was assimilated with Hathor, she was sometimes depicted with the twin horns of a cow on her head, with a solar disc between them.
Beyond Egypt’s Borders:
Isis was at the center of a cult that spread far beyond Egypt’s boundaries. The Romans were aware of the cult’s existence, but it was frowned upon by many of the ruling class. The emporer Augustus (Octavian) decreed that worship of Isis was forbidden as part of his attempt to return Rome to Roman gods. For some Roman worshippers, Isis was absorbed into the cult of Cybele, which held bloody rites in honor of their mother goddess. The cult of Isis moved as far afield as ancient Greece, and was known as a mystery tradition among the Hellenes until it was banned by Christianity around the sixth century c.e.
Goddess of Fertility and Motherhood:
In addition to being the fertile wife of Osiris, Isis is honored for her role as the mother of Horus, one of Egypt’s most powerful gods. She was also the divine mother of every pharoah of Egypt, and ultimately of Egypt itself. She assimilated with Hathor, another goddess of fertility, and is often depicted nursing her son Horus. There is a wide belief that this image served as inspiration for the classic Christian portait of the Madonna and Child.
Goddess of Magic:
After Ra created all things, Isis tricked him by creating a serpent which ambushed Ra on his daily journey across the heavens. The serpent bit Ra, who was powerless to undo the poison. Isis announced that she could heal Ra from the poison and destroy the serpent, but would only do so if Ra revealed his True Name as payment. By learning his True Name, Isis was able to gain power over Ra.
Goddess of Death and Rebirth:
After Set murdered and dismembered Osiris, Isis used her magic and power to bring her husband back to life. The realms of life and death are often associated with both Isis and her faithful sister Nephthys, who are depicted together on coffins and funerary texts. They are usually shown in their human form, with the addition of the wings that they used to shelter and protect Osiris.
Isis for a Modern Age:
Isis and Gardnerian Wicca
The Order of the Golden Dawn, founded by Aleister Crowley, recognized Isis as a powerful triple goddess and as such, she was passed down to modern Wicca when it was founded by Gerald Gardner.
Kemetic Wicca is a variation of Gardnerian Wicca that follows an Egyptian pantheon. Some Kemetic groups focus on the trinity of Isis, Orsiris and Horus and utilize prayers and spells found the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead.
Other Isiac Traditions
A number of contemporary Pagan traditions have adopted Isis as their patron Goddess and she is often found at the heart of Dianic Wiccan groups and other female-centered covens. Although modern Wiccan worship does not follow the same structure as the ancient Egyptian ceremonies that were once used to honor Isis, today’s Isiac covens incorporate Egyptian lore and mythology into a Wiccan framework, bringing the knowledge and worhsip of Isis into a contemporary setting.
In addition to these widely recognized traditions, there are countless eclectic Wiccan groups throughout the world that have selected Isis as their deity. Because of the strength and power displayed by Isis, spiritual paths that honor her are popular among many Pagans and Wiccans who are seeking alternatives to traditional patriarchal religious structures. Worship of Isis has seen a resurgence as part of the “Goddess-oriented” spirituality that has become a notable part of the New Age movement.

Man tells Dallas Police he stabbed woman to death because she said she was HIV-positive after sex

Larry Dunn (Dallas County Sheriff’s Department)
“She killed me so I killed her.”
According to a Dallas Police arrest affidavit, that is the reason 36-year-old Larry Dunn offered detectives for stabbing to death Cicely Bolden, who, as we noted this morning, was found Thursday afternoon in her southeast Oak Cliff apartment by her children returning home from school.
Police say the 28-year-old Bolden was found at 3:38 yesterday, undressed from the waist down and stabbed repeatedly in her neck. Officers called to the scene spoke to family and friends, who told them she’d been dating a man named Larry. And, they told officers: Bolden and Larry may have had a “heated disagreement” over the fact Bolden had tested HIV-positive.
Detectives found Dunn, who, police say, agreed to come down to DPD headquarters. Detectives read him his Miranda rights. He said he understood “and was willing to talk about the case,” says the affidavit; which he did, for a camera and microphone. And this, according to the affidavit, is what he said.
He told detectives he’d gone to the apartment to have sex with Bolden, and that after they’d finished she told him she was HIV-positive — and “that it is not that bad.” Bolden told detectives he was “upset” she hadn’t mentioned this before they’d had sex. So, according to the affidavit, “he got up out of bed and walked to the kitchen and got a knife,” and began stabbing her — twice, he told detectives. She put up a brief struggle. Then, she fell to the floor, dead.
“She killed me,” Dunn said, “so I killed her.”
Dunn told detectives he left, and that he burned his clothes. He said he tossed the knife in the dumpster of a Waffle House in Irving, which Dallas Police say they eventually recovered.
Concludes the affidavit: “Suspect Dunn’s statement is consistent with the crime scene.”
