KETCH THE TITLE
Homophobic Actor Proves He Is Bad at Acting
By Tyler Coates , February 28, 2013
Did you see that 21 & Over movie? It was like The Hangover, but with younger people you haven’t heard of. Anyway, all kinds of hijinx happened in it, apparently, as I learned in an interview with actor Miles Teller (now is when I admit that I didn’t see it and that I probably won’t). Teller, a 26-year-old whose previous credits include the remake of Footloose and Rabbit Hole (he was the teenager who accidentally killed Nicole Kidman’s son, which, surprisingly, is not really a spoiler), is a young actor who already is putting his foot down in regard to how far he will go for the sake of comedy.
In an interview with Metro News, Teller admits that kissing another dude makes him very uncomfy:
Diving right into the nudity issue, there are a few very bold scenes for you in this. How do you psyche yourself up for that?
Or not. I mean, I know when you read the script or agree to do a movie, you know you’re going to agree to do everything. The nudity stuff, I just made sure I worked out, you know what I mean? Because some movies you don’t have time. You can work out before a movie, but then when you’re shooting there’s really no time. I know some actors do it, and people should really give them credit because they’re working 14 hours a day, it’s exhausting, and then working out and getting like five hours of sleep. It’s pretty tough. So for this I just made sure I worked out, and the (guy-on-guy) kissing scene was something I tried to get rid of for a while. I was literally like pretty upset about that. And then we did it and it was just like CPR.
You were upset about it?
Kiss a guy? Yes. Inevitably, I did it for comedy. But they wanted me to use the tongue and I said, “Nope. It’s not that funny, man.”
These guys are known for going pretty far for a joke. Was there anything else where you had to draw the line?
No. I mean, there was a point where me and Skylar were shackled up and were getting spanked. At one point the shackle broke, so I had to bend over and fix it and s—, and there was all these girls around, and I was just like, “I’m sorry about some a—hole.” Then I just went down and fixed it. Other than that, I felt pretty safe. The humour that these guys write, they’re both extremely intelligent. And it’s funny, it’s well-written, it’s not, like, dumb comedy. I never felt like I was doing cheesy or manipulative stuff. I felt pretty comfortable with everything.
Yeah, man, two guys kissing isn’t funny, man. At least we agree there! But Teller is probably coming from a hyper-masculine place in which two guys kissing is “gross,” whereas I’m like, “Two guys kissing? Thumbs up!” But here’s the thing: would he get weird about kissing some strange woman he had met that day on the job? I doubt it! That probably falls under the “you’re going to agree to do everything” part of acting, like doing nude scenes and getting spanked alongside your male co-star. (Yeah, that’s no homo for sure.) But kiss a dude? With tongue? That’s way too faggy.
Also, if you can’t bring yourself to make out with a dude on camera because that’s what asked of you as an actor—if you can’t possibly pull off such a feat without looking obviously uncomfortable and weird—then you’re a bad actor. I have nothing to say about the sexual orientation part—I don’t know about Teller’s personal life, and I don’t care—but I can certainly say that he’s not very good at his job.

VICTORY IN DAH SPIRIT! MATIE HELD CAPTIVE AND MADE TO DO DOMESTIC CHORES
WESTERN BUREAU:
A St James woman who allegedly beat her husband’s ex-girlfriend and held her captive had her bail extended until June 5 when she appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Twenty-seven-year-old Latoya Farquharson, of a Spot Valley address, was previously before the court on January 23 for assault occasioning bodily harm, committed against Santana Bowen, and had been offered bail in the sum of $250,000.
Allegations are that on January 19, Bowen – who is reportedly an ex-girlfriend of Farquharson’s husband – was invited via text message to visit her ex-boyfriend’s house at Rhyne Park in St James the following day. However, when she arrived there she was confronted by the defendant, who beat her all over her body with a broomstick.
Farquharson then called her friends to assist in beating Bowen, following which the complainant was locked inside Farquharson’s house and forced to wash the defendant’s clothes and clean the floor with her own clothes. She was then beaten again and released three hours later, after which she made a police report that subsequently led to Farquharson’s arrest.
mediation
Yesterday, clerk of the court Orrett Brown revealed that Bowen had turned down offers to settle the dispute through mediation.
“I have had discussions with the complainant’s mother, and she told me that the complainant is not interested in mediation,” Brown told Resident Magistrate Sheron Barnes.
“We will have further discussions and see where it goes,” said attorney-at-law Dalton Reid, who represents Bowen in the matter.
Meanwhile, Farquharson’s lawyer Adrian Dayes asked for additional time for him to receive statements in the case from the prosecution.
“I wish to have a mention date for statements in the matter; we have had discussions,” Dayes advised the magistrate.
“The matter is set for mention on June 5,” RM Barnes declared to Farquharson.

Grammy Award Winning Gospel Singer Michael Winans Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison
BY ADMIN IN CHRISTIAN NEWS · FEBRUARY 28, 2013 · NO COMMENTS
Michael Winans Jr., a member of a well known gospel music family and a onetime Grammy nominee, was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years and 9 months in prison for defrauding more than 1,200 investors in an $8 million dollar pyramid scheme. He was also ordered to pay his victims $4.8 million in restitution.
Winans was blasted by the judge, Sean Cox, and federal prosecutor, Abed Hammoud, for using his family’s name and his Christian faith to ruin the lives of numerous churchgoers in a financial scam.
Judge Cox said that Winans took advantage of “good, decent, church-going people.” He went on to say, “That is very, very troubling to me…You used…churches to perpetuate this fraud.”
Hammoud, Assistant U.S. Attorney, said of Winans: “He used religion. He used the church, the good reputation of the family,” to rob victims. He went on to add in the sentencing memo that Winans led “investors…to believe they were investing in Saudi Arabian crude oil bonds that he well knew did not exist.”
Winans pled guilty in October to wire fraud. Prosecutors said in court filings that “he clearly abused the fact that he came from a very well known family with a good reputation in order to induce people to invest with him.”
In his address to the court, Winans acknowledged that “I did make mistakes.” I caused “financial and emotional damage. For that I repent,” Winans told the judge.
Winans is the grandson of David (Pop) Winans Sr. and the nephew of Marvin Winans, the pastor of Perfecting Church in Detroit who is known nationally for his gospel music. Marvin Winans, who gave the eulogy last year at Whitney Houston’s funeral, was in the courtroom today. He did not comment.
At the sentencing, there were also several victims of the pyramid scheme, some of whom cried. In many cases, people fooled by Winans convinced loved ones to give money. Some lost their homes, their college tuition money, and the trust of ones close to them.
POLICE BRUTALITY IN SOUTH AFRICA

JOHANNESBURG February 28, 2013 (AP)
They bound his hands to the rear of a van, and then sped off, dragging the slender taxi driver along the pavement as a crowd of onlookers shouted in dismay. The man was later found dead.
A gut-wrenching video of the scene is all the more disturbing because the men who abused the Mozambican immigrant were uniformed South African police officers and the van was a marked police vehicle.
The graphic scenes of the victim struggling for his life shocked a nation long accustomed to reports of police violence.
The Daily Sun, a South African newspaper, posted video the footage Thursday and it was quickly picked up by other South African news outlets and carried on the Internet. It sparked immediate outrage.
“They are there for safety, but we as a people fear them more,” said Johannesburg resident Alfonso Adams. “You don’t know who to trust anymore.”
Some of those in the crowd who watched the scene unfold in the Daveyton township east of Johannesburg shouted at the police and warned that it was being videotaped. The police did not seem at all concerned by all the witnesses and the presence of cameras as they tied Mido Macia, a 27-year-old from neighboring Mozambique, to the back of a police vehicle, his hands behind his head. At least three policemen participated in the incident. Macia was found dead in a Daveyton police cell late Tuesday.
“We are going to film this,” several onlookers shouted in Zulu as the police tormented Macia. One bystander can be heard on the videotape shouting in Zulu: “What has this guy done?”
A murder probe is underway on the evidence that Macia suffered head and upper abdomen injuries, including internal bleeding, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the police watchdog agency, said Thursday. The injuries could be from the dragging and he could also have been beaten later in police custody.
“The allegations are that he was dragged behind a vehicle and his head was bent on the police vehicle. There are also allegations of assault,” said the investigative unit’s spokesman Moses Dlamini.
The video evidence of the abuse renewed concerns about brutality, corruption and other misconduct by a national police force whose reputation has suffered in recent years amid reports that many officers lack training. Some have been charged with committing the crimes they are supposed to prevent, including rape and murder.
“As horrific as it is, it is not exceptional. Hardly a week goes by without such stories of brutality,” said Jacob van Garderen, national director of Lawyers for Human Rights.
At first, Macia, dressed in jeans and a red T-shirt, is dragged along the road by the vehicle at slow speed, the footage shows. He awkwardly tries to keep step even though he is almost horizontal above the ground. Then the van stops, two policemen pick up the legs of the taxi driver and drop them to the ground as the van picks up speed and drives off, beyond the view of the camera.
The police watchdog agency said the incident started just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday when the cab driver was allegedly obstructing traffic with his vehicle. Then Macia allegedly assaulted a constable and took his weapon before he was overpowered, the police investigative unit said.
Macia was found dead in a cell over two hours later by another policeman, according to the watchdog agency.

JOHANNESBURG February 28, 2013 (AP)
National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega “strongly condemned” what happened. South Africans are “urged to remain vigilant and continue to report all acts of crime irrespective of who is involved,” said Phiyega in a statement.
Phiyega has tried to upgrade the reputation of the South African police since her appointment last year. Last month, Phiyega told a group of police officials the standing of the force “has been severely but not irreparably tarnished over the past several years.”
The problems, though, are immense for a police force that has expanded from some 120,000 to almost 200,000 over the last decade, “often failing to match the increase in quantity with sufficient quality,” said Johan Burger, who served for 36 years on the force before becoming a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies.
Several experts contacted by The Associated Press also said that in recent years there has been an increasing willingness to use a shoot-to-kill approach to the crime and violence.
An average of 860 people a year died in police custody or as a result of police action between 2009 and 2010, up from 695 a year from 2003 to 2008, according to Burger of the security studies institute.
Further staining the reputation of the police is the Marikana shootings when, on Aug. 16, 2012, a line of South African police opened fire on a crowd of striking miners, killing 34 at a platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg. A judicial commission is investigating allegations that many were killed in a rocky hill, near the much-filmed initial scene of the attack, shot in the back as they tried to escape.
