Has been acting strangely since dad’s death

Western Bureau:

Ever since his father, ice cream vendor Fredrick Turner, died in a motorcycle accident two weeks ago, 19-year-old Kevin Turner has reportedly been acting strangely, chasing residents of his home district, Petersfield, Westmoreland, with a knife, inflicting wounds on a few occasions.

Concerned about his mental state, relatives have been repeatedly taking him to get medical attention.

Yesterday, Kevin is believed to have done the unthinkable – beheading his 76-year-old grandmother, Phyllis Watson-Turner, who had only recently returned to the island from her home in Canada to bury his dad.

“He (Kevin) has been acting strangely since his father died … . I guess he took it very hard,” said Senior Detective Paul Bernard, the police’s crime chief for Westmoreland.

“We have learnt that he had been chasing people around the community and flashing knives in their faces.”

A relative told The Gleaner that on Wednesday night, Turner (Kevin) and his grandmother retired to bed in the house they had been sharing since she returned to the island to make funeral preparations for the youngster’s father.

“This morning, he (Kevin) turned up at another relative’s house covered in blood and said he was slaughtering chickens,” said the relative, who asked not to be identified. “However, because of the amount of blood on him, it was clear that his story was not true.”

headless body discovered

Relatives said Kevin was taken back to the house he shared with his grandmother and it was there that her headless body was discovered and the police alerted.

When he was asked for his grandmother’s head, the young man reportedly said he did not know because all he had slaughtered were chickens. When asked what he did with the heads of the chickens, the relatives claim he went and fetched his grandmother’s head, which he calmly placed beside her body.

“After the grandmother’s body was found, he left the grieving relatives behind and went into the community and attacked another man with a knife,” said Bernard. “It was after that that we managed to hold him and take him into custody.”

Although it appeared quite obvious that he was responsible for his grandmother’s death, Bernard said investigations were still continuing and he has not yet been charged.

“We have charged him for the man he attacked and wounded after his grandmother’s body was found, but we have not charged him for anything else at this time,” Bernard said. “Nonetheless, I believe charges will be laid against him soon.”

JAMAICA GETTING SLACKER

CHANCES ARE if 25-year-old Andre ‘Tall Man’ Edwards had $20, he would be still alive, and so too would 23- year-old Damion Smith. Edwards and Smith were both killed Tuesday afternoon in Savannah Cross, May Pen, Clarendon.

According to residents of Savannah Cross, Smith and Edwards were working as labourers on a construction site in the community when Smith asked Edwards for $20. Edwards, unable to give Smith the money, was beaten with a shovel. He died while undergoing treatment at the May Pen Hospital.

An angry mob quickly captured Smith as he tried to flee the community and hacked him to death, just a couple feet from where he supposedly killed Edwards earlier.

Edwards’ death has left the Savannah Cross community in shock. They described him as a kind, caring and hard-working young man.

“Tall Man a good boy, him nuh deserve to die like this. Can you imagine somebody beg you $20 and because you don’t have it to give to him, him use a shovel and beat you to death, after you just cook lunch and give him,” asked Fredrick Herdsman, angrily, as he gathered with a group of Edwards’ friends in Savannah Cross.

Denford Williams, one of Edwards’ friends and a neighbour, painted a glowing picture of the deceased.

“Me can’t believe say somebody can kill you fi $20, if Tall Man did have it, him would a give him the money, I know him. He is just a kind lad,” insisted Williams.

Smith’s grandmother, Elvin Harris, while expressing shock at the violent turn of events, and fearing that she may be attacked, said that her grandson just came into the community two weeks ago to live with her, after residing in St Maarten and Montego Bay.

“I don’t know what get in to him, him come up two weeks now, and the next thing me hear a big noise say him killed Tall Man, and them killed him back,” said Harris.

“You think them a go come and kill me too, sar,” she asked this reporter.

Tuesday’s incident is the fourth jungle-justice killing in the last few weeks.

AH HOPE DEM NAH BAIT UP BUJU

Could a female juror’s passion for law compromise the outcome of Buju Banton’s trial?

Well, new information is that a female juror on Buju Banton’s federal drug and gun trial has revealed in an exclusive interview with New Times, that she researched certain aspects of the case to have a better grasp of them when deliberation came around.

However, standard jury instructions for federal trials tell jurors to “not attempt to research any fact, issue or law related to the case, whether by discussion with others, by library or Internet research, or by any other means or source.”

So could violations of these instructions lead to a mistrial and open up a new avenue for appeals?

David Markus, the Miami-based attorney who handled Buju’s first trial and retrial said in an email to New Times that “Jurors are given specific instructions not to do their own research for lots of good reasons and that there’s a strong likelihood of a new trial.

Buju Banton is slated to appear in a federal courtroom later this month for resentencing on the gun charge. If guilty the reggae entertainer could get an additional five years to his sentence.
