KINGSTON, Jamaica – The principal of Penwood High School, Austin Burrell, has resigned after receiving death threats relating to a stabbing incident in which a student died last month.
On April 20 Burrell requested early retirement, which was to begin January 2014, but returned to the Education Ministry just days later to say he received two texts that he considered threats on his life, a release from the ministry said.

Burrell reported the matter to the police and was escorted to the school on April 28 to clear his desk.
While the contents of the text messages were not revealed, the ministry in the release said “we are convinced that they did present a clear threat to the life of the principal.”
Nario Coleman, 16, was stabbed to death during a dispute with others students at the Corporate Area School on April 11.
The incident sparked national outrage with many saying that Coleman’s death could have been prevented had a school administrator stepped in to quell the dispute which lasted several minutes.

DOWNSOUND MOTHERS DAY LAUNCH

MOM Launch

Ladies and gentlemen I am most grateful for your presence at this important launch and wish to inform you that you should not be deceived by appearances. If I do seem to be puffed up let me make it clear that this is due to my sinus and not my ego.

I would like to think that my association with this event To Mom with Love is another tangible expression of my commitment and that of DownSound Records to Jamaican entertainment. We at DownSound have not only been making records, developing artistes and staging events but believe in providing support for other Jamaican brands and music related ventures which we deem viable but which might find it difficult to secure backing from some of the traditional sources of financing. Jamaican entertainment has achieved much but could have done far more with greater levels of cooperation among the various sectors of the society. We intend in our own small way to change this as much as we can through the prudent deployment of our resources that is not unlimited. Great Jamaican brands like Sting have not been shown the respect and given the support that they deserve. It is consistent with our efforts to change this trend why we became associated with Laing and Sting in the first place. Let me be clear that despite our association with Laing and his legend we do not make our investment decisions under the gun. I will become involved only in projects that provide a measure of guarantee for success. Despite the rumors to the contrary our resources are not unlimited though we wished they were. Even my friend Laing has to justify his proposals or I will not get involved. That’s just the way it is.

DownSound is a business not a charity, however, we believe that we would not be fulfilling our mission if we were only concerned with the idea of making money. This is why we are proud to be associated with To Mom with Love which will make a needy mom from Water House happy not only by inviting her to the event and taking care of the expenses for her to attend but by using part of the proceeds from the show to assist her in securing a comfortable home. Music and the resources generated by it’s use should make people happy. We know that you will thoroughly enjoy the show on mother’s day and remind you that your attendance is about much more than the music. It is about a woman and a cause. It’s about unity. . . strength and benevolence.

Happy Mother’s Day
