WEST PALM BEACH — One man is dead and a woman was in critical condition Monday night after an attempted murder and suicide in the city’s north end, police said.
Police found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the woman with a gunshot wound to the head, said Capt. David Bernhardt, city police spokesman said.
The woman was rushed in critical condition to St. Mary’s Medical Center, two blocks to the north. She is expected to live, Bernhardt said.
Police did not immediately identify the man or the woman.
The shooting happened shortly after 6 p.m. outside a single-family home in the 900 block of 43rd Street. According to police, the man shot the woman before taking his own life.
Witnesses at the scene said the woman is in her 20s and the man in his 30s.
A woman who did not want to give her name said the couple recently had experienced domestic troubles.
“”I knew they were having issues, like all couples do,” she said. “But I didn’t know it was to that extent, where he’d want to take her life”
Investigators were checking the man and woman’s backgrounds late Monday to see whether there had been any previous domestic-related calls to the home, Bernhardt said.
Two young children were present but were not injured in the shootings, Bernhardt said. The children are believed to belong to one of the woman’s family members. Crime scene tape bocked a stretch of Windsor Avenue as dozens of onlookers observed the investigation.
“It’s very sad,” Andrew Charles, who lives in Lake Worth, said. “It’s surprising to see something like that happen.”
