This morning President Obama answered questions at the White House press briefing, and made a point to discuss his pride and support for the NBA’s Jason Collins, who came out as gay yesterday. The President, who had finished the press conference, returned the podium to answer a reporter’s question on Collins and spoke at length about the NBA star and the impact on the LGBT equality movement.

“I told him I couldn’t be prouder of him,” said President Obama of a call with Collins yesterday.” “One of the extraordinary measures of progress that we’ve seen in this country has been the recognition that the LGBT community deserves full equality.”

In the 24 hours since Collins made the announcement via Sports Illustrated, he has received an outpouring of support from his colleagues in the NBA, celebrities, political leaders and fans.

Among the other prominent Americans who have taken to social media to express their support for Collinis were Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Ellen Degeneres, Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton, Russell Simmons and Major League Baseball (MLB).
