WEEPING & MOANING
11,000 public sector jobs to go
Golding made the announcement today in his Budget presentation in Parliament today.
Golding defended the decision by saying that this action among others will result in savings of $40-50 billion dollars.
“These savings will come primarily from staff reduction and the disposal of assets arising from the privatization and outsourcing of certain functions. Even greater benefit is expected from improved efficiency and productivity,” Golding said.

The St Thomas police are now searching for a student who was one of four boys accused of severely beating a male teacher at a high school in the parish on Teachers’ Day.
The attack has caused members of the teaching profession to express concern about the attack on their colleague.
“This is what the teaching profession has become. On a day when you should be pampered, you are the victim of those we teach,” a teacher told THE WEEKEND STAR.
Reports are that on Wednesday, about 3 p.m., a Teachers’ Day function was held at the institution.
After the function, a request was made that the students return the chairs to the classrooms.
It is said, however, the students instead tried to leave the room but were prevented from doing so by the male teacher.
Reports are that the students became disgruntled and attacked him hitting him all over his body. The teacher is said to have had to seek medical attention.
A report was also made to the police and three of the boys were arrested and slapped with wounding and assault charges.
When THE WEEKEND STAR contacted the director of communication in the Ministry of Education, Colin Blair, he said they are aware of the incident and an investigation is under way.
In January, a fight at the institution resulted in the wounding of three boys. The case is still before the court.

Several teenagers had to be removed from the Oxford House parking lot, located along Oxford Road near Mas Camp in the wee hours last Saturday morning, because they were caught making out after a carnival event.
Information reaching THE STAR is that about 4:30 a.m., six teenagers who appeared to be intoxicated after attending the event were seen by a security guard in compromising positions in the parking lot.
“There was a lot of tongue-bathing. I don’t think they know what they were doing, them get on very much, they were definitely drunk,” the security guard told THE STAR.
He reasoned, “Some youths maybe 16 years and a little over, both girls and boys seem like they were drinking, get drunk … . Some of them was falling down, some of them was laying down in the flower beds, some went to the car, then them draw dem back out.”
THE STAR understands that it was the females who were indulging in the acts while the males were trying to stop them. “The youth dem was black but the young ladies dem was white, uptown. The boys were trying to shield the girls ’cause they were kissing each other,” the guard remarked.
A woman who works on the compound, who happened to witness what the teenagers were doing, said, “It’s really sad to see what these young ladies are doing with themselves. What kind of parent allows their teenage daughters to be out at that hour and at these events?”
In an interview with THE STAR recently, Dr Grace Kelly, president of the Jamaica Association of Guidance Counsellors of Education, made an appeal to unscrupulous persons who are feeding students with substances such as drugs and alcohol to stop the abuse. She also urged students to desist from using these substances because it can affect their development.
