WHAT IS JOKE TO YOU……….

Kate Prank Call Nurse ’Commits Suicide’
Sky News – 19 minutes ago.. .

A nurse working at the hospital treating the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge, who was duped by a prank phone call, has died in a suspected suicide.

Jacintha Saldanha, 46, who has worked at the hospital for four years, was found dead at an address near King Edward VII’s hospital in London on Friday morning.

The hospital confirmed she had been the victim of a hoax call in which two Australian DJs, pretending to be the Queen and Prince of Wales, phoned up about Kate.

Ms Saldanha, a mother of two, received the call and put it through to the ward where another nurse updated the pair on the Duchess, who was being treated for severe morning sickness.

Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt said the nurse was from Bristol and has a son and a daughter. ”The hospital had not suspended Ms Saldanha, nor disciplined her,” he added.

Her family said in a statement: ”We as a family are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Jacintha.”

The owners of the radio station say the two DJs behind the call are ”deeply shocked” by the tragedy. They have been dropped from their show until further notice amid a major backlash.

Kate, who is understood to be well under 12 weeks pregnant, was admitted to the hospital on Monday after falling ill over the weekend and released again on Thursday.

The Duchess and her husband, William, the Duke of Cambridge, said in a statement that they were ”deeply saddened” by the nurse’s death.

”Their Royal Highnesses were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time,” they said.

A St James’s Palace spokesman added: ”At no point did the Palace complain to the hospital about the incident. On the contrary, we offered our full and heartfelt support to the nurses involved and hospital staff at all times.”

The King Edward VII Hospital said: ”It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha.

”Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII’s Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues.

”We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital. The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time.”

Hospital chief executive John Lofthouse said: ”Our thoughts and deepest sympathies at this time are with her family and friends. Everyone is shocked by the loss of a much-loved and valued colleague.”

Lord Glenarthur, the hospital’s chairman, said: ”This is a tragic event. Jacintha was a first class nurse who cared diligently for hundreds of patients during her time with us. She will be greatly missed.”

Dr Peter Carter, chief executive and general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, added: ”This is tragic news, and the thoughts of all at the Royal College of Nursing go to the family of Jacintha Saldanha.

”It is deeply saddening that a simple human error due to a cruel hoax could lead to the death of a dedicated and caring member of the nursing profession.”

Police were called to the address at 9.35am on Friday after a report about a woman found unconscious. Paramedics rushed to the property but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ”Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of the incident. The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.”

Michael Christian and Mel Greig, DJs on the 2DayFM radio station, broadcast their call to the hospital on Wednesday morning.

Greig, impersonating the Queen, asked to speak to her ”granddaughter Catherine” and managed to persuade Ms Saldanha to put her through to the ward where Kate was being treated.

The security breach was deeply embarrassing for the hospital, which is the medical institution of choice for the Royal Family.

The DJs apologised for the prank after an initial furore but later took to Twitter to brag of their success – calling it the ”easiest prank call ever made”.

Following Ms Saldanha’s death, the radio station’s owners said: ”Southern Cross Austereo and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII’s Hospital and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and all that have been affected by this situation around the world.

”Chief Executive Officer Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters, they are both deeply shocked and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances.

”SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.”

Saw the news while in the airport yesterday and couldn’t believe weh me a see! Though I may think its foolish, especially the nurse having two kids to commit suicide, I also know the british have a very HIGH level of respect for their royalties. Poor woman prob did feel so foolish and betrayed! God knows what she went through those past few days!! It’s a very very sad thing, and I too believe the radio hosts should not only lose their jobs for such a silly prank, but should be held accountable for the nurses death.

I can’t say I understand how she felt to bring her to the conclusion to take her life away from her family but what I can say is this. I don’t know their confidentiality rules over there but queen or not I AM NOT ALLOWED TO GIVE PATIENT INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. If your not satisfied with my response you can directly contact her doctor (in a professional manner & tone of course). Where I work visitors come and go as they please here and a lot of us don’t feel safe. Security will call the floor & ask can the patient family come up at 12am and that security gets a tongue lashing because you of all people know visiting hours are over. Then when they do let them up after visiting hours they come and give orders, make complaints because they think that their at a hotel and their family member is a celebrity and should get such status treatment. It interferes with our routine and that’s why there are rules to abide by.

I read this yesterday and i was so sad.
This lady felt humiliated in front of the whole world so she took her life in order to not face the disgrace and humiliation. “not to say it was the right thing to do ”
I really do believe her husband should bring a lawsuit against the DJ’s and the radio station.

I agree @ Slimz that HIPA LAW forbids giving information to anyone over the phone or otherwise “unless a ROI is on file ” but imagine you are of the belief that the “Queen ” is on the phone with you. Its actually a situation of being caught between a rock and a hard place.
If it is really the Queen you do not want to be the person to “diss her ” and then folks in higher places will forget that you were only adhering to the rules and come down hard on you just to make an impression.

One night this man came at 1am saying he just got off work & wants to see his wife. We told him we understand but she is sleeping and visiting hours are over so he has to come back. He found every excuse in the book to come upstairs. When he realized we weren’t letting him up he finally let it be known why he needs to come up so bad. As she’s in the hospital no one is home to cook for him so she was saving the hospital food for him to eat. Mi juss scrape up de food and give to him cause mi nuh wha de man starve. When mi reach back upstairs de woman start one bag a cussing cause we nuh let de man come up all a point pan mi an seh she wha mi fired after mi feed she hungry belly husband. That’s why mi teach mi son them fu clean, wash, cook etc. for themselves

@Addicted I ALWAYS remember an example a teacher used in school. “If Oprah was your patient would you NOT use Universal Precautions because its Oprah”? That has stayed with me for years. I don’t care who you are, if breaking the rules can land me in jail or take bread & butter out of my kids mouth I’m not doing it.

Everyone IN AMERICA knows about HIPAA. That was the UK, two different country. Yes! They may have their own privacy act in place, true! HOWEVER, This call was not answered by that particular nurse, but was transferred to her unit. How was she supposed to know these weren’t who they say they were, if the call was clear from an admin and connected to her?

  • LUNDUN says:

    good day met and metters

diss was sad and made me really angry when i heard. ppl in the uk are incredibly hostile to immigrants. they don’t show it while passing u on the street (some of them atleast) but on blogs or news site they will let rip.

alot of ppl were saying, she was an idiot not to spot di fake accent, and that england have too much foriegn nurses in our hospitals that don’t even know how to speak english much less spot a fake accent.

many said she should be fired, i felt really sorry for her, and truely feel she thought it was the queen and did not want to turn her down.

nuffy, she was the one who spoke to the prankters, then she passed the call unto the ward nurse dealing with kate.

Firstly the nurse shouldn’t be blamed in my opinion. I would think that when you have such a high profile person in the hospital there is protocol that the personnel would be briefed & one would think that special instructions would be given in regard to Kate staying there. I think that nurse was not instructed otherwise & so she did what maybe was always done. It is sad that she had to go to that extreme. I agree Lundun
