Monday, November 26, 2012 – Drama unraveled in Bungoma during a burial ceremony of a middle aged mother of 7 when the deceased’s mother went to the in laws homestead as the burial ceremony was ongoing and slept on the deceased’s bed before removing her corpse from the coffin and lying on it which is against the Bukusu traditions.

Residents who are still in shock said that the act by the elderly woman will bring a bad omen to the family of the deceased unless elders do a special ceremony to appease the ancestors.

Apparently the woman, Catherisa Nekesa, the mother of the deceased – Joan Munika claimed that the in laws had not paid bride price for her in the many years they have been married with her husband.

In rebellion to block the in laws from burying her on their land and to push the family to pay some amount of money in form of dowry, the woman had to cause the drama which will lead to many more ceremonies in the form of dowry payment which is normally done when the woman is alive.
