HPV causing rise in male throat cancer
By Monica Robins. WKYC-TV, Cleveland Updated 5/8/2012 6:41 PM

OLMSTED TOWNSHIP, Ohio — In the past decade, oncologists have noted an increase in cancers at the back of the tongue, in the tonsils and into the throat, especially in healthy, nonsmoking men.

More than 7,000 new cases of oropharyngeal cancers are diagnosed each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most are in men, and those who don’t use tobacco often find another common cause: the human papillomavirus, better known as HPV.
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says at least half of all sexually active people will get genital HPV at some time in their lives.
But certain strains of human papillomavirus also can live in the mouth, passed on through oral sex. The type of cancer it causes is more likely to be discovered by your dentist than your urologist or family practitioner.
Five years ago, Jeff Husney discovered a lump in his neck eventually diagnosed as
Signs of head and neck cancers include weight loss, unexplained hoarseness, a sore throat that lasts more than two weeks, coughing up blood and a lump in the neck.
“I was watching my diet and nutrition closer as I was getting towards middle age,” he said. He never smoked, hardly drank, and exercised frequently.
When he initially was tested for HPV, the results were negative. The CDC says there are no HPV tests recommended for men because all are geared toward screening women for cervical cancer.
Husney called his results a false negative.
“HPV more than likely was the reason I had this cancer,” he said.
The good news, according to Dr. Brian Burkey, a Cleveland Clinic oncologist, is that HPV throat cancers are typically 90 percent curable, regardless of stage.
“Because of its epidemic proportions, it really could become a major health problem,” he said.
But a vaccine available now also could prevent it.
Gardasil was approved several years ago for young girls to prevent HPV infection. Now the CDC also recommends the vaccine for boys, ages 9 to 26.
Husney is encouraging his own sons to consider the vaccine because he remembers how difficult the cancer treatment was for him.
He couldn’t eat, talk or swallow and needed a feeding tube to get his nutrients.
“It’s a very painful and challenging form of treatment,” Husney said. “Besides it being cancer, I would hope to spare my sons that path.”

CC cah people worried i guess lol

This is no joking matter. I hope everyone monitors their diet, exercise more, and try to keep your partners that you’re sexually active with to a minimum. When i wrote that MEN contract this virus as well and can develop throat cancer, i wrote it because A LOT of people DO NOT KNOW. Each one teach one, and while you’re teaching, u should also keep a listening ear open to learn while u teach.

I bet u nuff man stop nyam every cratches outta road and take heed. You’ll unfortunately always have those who believe it cannot happen to them.

I’m also not a fan of those doctors who tell u that u need a biopsy every time they test for the disease. Go out and get second and third opinions before u let any doctor perform any procedure on u. Some are profiting off of this by chopping off ah piece of your cervix every chance they get, which is causing a lot of miscarriages in women.

The only advice is to put YOU first and always be on your p’s and q’s.

  • Tawkchuet says:

Its amazing how ppl still think its perfectly fine to have oral r even just sex with multiple partners thinking their actions are just liberal. These diseases seem to evolve themselves at an alarming rate, boy it’s really scary protect urselves ppl look for signs always smh very weary

  • Cindy Royal says:

There is a strain of clap now that penicillin not curing, so all sexually active ppl need to really be careful.

  • dee says:

di gal dem weh love nyam cocky mi know unnuh a fret! suck too much and di bow cat man dem to dwl !!

  • Regula says:

@Tawkchuet I like that word you used ‘evolve’ because nothing is new under the sun. Oral sex has been around for centuries an so too many of the organisms that are now affecting us negatively, A prime example of this is HSV/Herpes, We all know it as a STD but it was previously seen as a simple skin infection more akin to chicken pox. It then evolved to an infection of the mouth HSV1/(night fever) cold sore and then through oral sex, presumably, Migrated to the genitals to become known as HSV2. Reading is my hobby so for all who wondering where I get my sometimes obscure knowledge, go bury your head in a book. Its better to speak and be corrected than to say nothing at all.

  • For real says:

There are two types of HPV.. High Risk and Low risk HPV. The above video is referring to high risk HPV.. This STD is different from other STD. Because even if you wear condoms it will not protect you from High risk HPV. Also, men cannot be tested for this (only women). Great video and article.

  • Dwrl says:

Mi tell UNNO dis under the AIDS topics a tun a times. Sadly I don’t think they find this throat cancer in women. Most cases are with the men, they saying If a man eat 3 different women it’s likely he will catch it, it is rapid because now because the man dem fuck out so damn cocky can hardly stand up they have no other choice but to eat to please us women.

  • Dwrl says:

Another thing once you have HPV you are more likely to contract HIV because your immune system is working over time to fight off each disease and it may be too weak at the moment you contract it to fight it off. A weak immune system put you at a very high risk!
