DOES ANYONE KNOW HIM? SO SAD

No one has come forward to claim the remains of a construction worker that died during a building collapse Monday. Winston Gillett marked his 67th birthday just days before he fell to his death at a job site in Fort Green, Brooklyn.

City officials said structural beams gave way after heavy material was delivered to the roof of the building.

Brooklyn Councilwoman Letitia James has been trying to help locate Gillett’s family. “He represents countless, faceless number of individuals who work on these projects throughout the city of New York,” James said. “This is the third fatality in my district in a year and a half and they were all non-union, non-skilled labor.”

Gillett had previously worked for a construction company called TTNJ Community Based Organization. They were not involved in Monday’s accident. Raynette McGhee was Gillett’s supervisor at TTNJ. “He was a good guy. He was an older man that would still get out there and work hard,” McGhee recalled. “At 67, you’re supposed to retire and he was out there still trying.” According to McGhee, Gillett was a laborer who would clean up and prep work sites. “Whatever you asked him to do, he always did it,” she said.

Ellen Borakove from the city’s medical examiner said Gillett died of multiple blunt impact injuries. “Crushed by building,” was the official cause of death.

The 67-year-old was working at the site to build five four-story townhouses, called the Carlton Mews. City officials said the project had only one violation, which occurred during the excavation of the building next door to the one that collapsed. But the contractor, Professional Grade Construction, did have seven violations at a job site at 3007 Farragut Road, in Brooklyn. Several were for safety violations, including not installing guard rails. A partial stop work order was issued in April for inadequate use of hoisting equipment, and still remains in effect, according to the Buildings Department.

The federal Occupation, Safety and Health Administration also fined Professional Grade $4,000 for violations that include electric shock hazards and unguarded power tools at the Farragut site. OSHA is investigating Monday’s accident and will determine whether safety violations contributed to the accident, which led to Gillett’s death and injured two others.

Professional Grade, located in Brooklyn, did not respond to a request for comment.

James said if no one comes forward to claim Gillett’s remains she will ask the contractor and owner of the property to pay for his funeral. “I would hope the owner and contractor would do that,” she said.

Gillett is believed to be a Jamaican immigrant. The consulate has been informed of his death and is also searching for loved ones, according to James.

Borakove added Gillett would not be in danger of a city burial because the city knows people are actively seeking out his relatives. “There’s no reason to rush it if we know people are looking,” she said.

Hijacking Olympic glory for political gain is dangerous

I love sport, but the media’s pop psychology and UK politicians’ bellowing patriotism has cheapened the athletes’ achievement

I saw nothing to justify the hysteria, the sobbing with joy and weeping with ecstasy, of the London media and politicians. The grasping for national pride and pseudo-psychological significance exaggerated the event and cheapened the athletes’ achievement. As for the prime minister asking the Games minister, Jeremy Hunt, to run the NHS “because of the Olympics”, it was worthy of Caligula.

Mayor Boris Johnson’s hilarious speech to the London crowd on Monday shamelessly upstaged David Cameron’s. The latter had modestly suggested the London Games would be remembered “for hundreds of years” and showed Britain could “do great things … and take on the world and, yes, we can win”. Johnson went berserk. He bellowed of a nation in paroxysms of joy, of orgasms on tube trains and songs on sofas, or vice versa. Both men shamelessly hijacked the games, acclaiming a nation on a shining path to collective recovery. They were like Soviet leaders lauding the virtues of higher tractor production.

Hijacking any cultural enterprise to a political goal is dangerous. Johnson should know that those who lived by the Roman mob died by it. He exulted in his uproarious jokes and ridiculed “the doubters and gloomsters”, but he never mentioned his own status as gloomster-in-chief. Only six weeks ago, he was telling Londoners on the tube to get out of town since hell was about to break loose. They did. Johnson must have cost the London economy millions.

No one I know seriously doubted London could stage a successful Olympics, given enough money. The doubts were over value for money, given that it would be immeasurable.

WTF AFRICA- WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO PONY IN CHURCH

Wonders they say will never cease. The weirdest things just seem to happen only in Nigeria and when we think that’s the last we will ever hear, another one suddenly pops up reminding us that we are not done yet. From the little child that was allegedly born with what looks like the holy Qur’an in his hand to the one that was born firmly holding a rosary in one hand, one common thread runs through all of them, they defy logical reasoning. Read this below and share your thoughts:

Worshippers at the World Liberation Ministry located along old Sapele-Benin express road on Tuesday took to their heels during a prophesy programme when a female member gave birth to a horse.

The horse was however dead by the time Journalists visited the church. It was gathered that the woman whose identity is not yet known started screaming during the prayer session and began to bleed from the v*g*na before the horse came out.

The General Overseer of the church, Evangelist Silva Wealth, said he was still amazed at what came out of the woman. He told Journalists that during prayers a revelation came that there was a woman with an issue and that something was blocking her womb. Silva said as prayers intensified, the woman started screaming and bled as the object came out of her.

The cleric said he couldn’t confirm whether the horse was dead or alive because he didn’t go near it.

“I can’t describe the object. We have seen people that vomited several things during our service but not this type of thing. God has been blessing our ministry with prophesies and miracles”, he said.

As soon as news of the mysterious delivery filtered into town, people rushed to the church to catch a glimpse of the horse.
