CYAA POST BAIL BUT MARRIED TWO TIME

MEMPHIS, TN –
(WMC-TV) – A Memphis man was arrested Wednesday for having two wives, the first of whom turned him in when she found out about his second marriage.

It is against the law to be legally married to more than one person.

Reverend Earle Fisher recalled a wedding ceremony he officiated last summer at Memphis Botanic Gardens.

“It was a very pleasant ceremony,” said Fisher.

Fisher did not realize at the time that 47-year-old groom Boi Jones was already married.

“I think any minister in good faith would not perform a wedding of somebody who they already knew, even possibly, was still married to someone else,” said Fisher. “Clearly, this was well beyond my scope of knowledge.”

Jones was eventually charged with bigamy, defined as the crime of marrying a second time while a previous marriage is still legally in effect.

“As far as I know, in all state, it’s a crime to be married to two people at the same time,” said Memphis family law attorney Miles Mason, Sr.

Mason said he finds it difficult to believe someone would not know better, even in the midst of a divorce.

“Until a divorce is final, it’s not final,” said Mason.

According to police, Jones’ first wife discovered his second marriage to a 25-year-old woman with whom he lives in a duplex more than a year after Jones asked his first wife for some “time away.”

Jones was again arrested Wednesday morning after a warrant was issued for missing a court date.

Bigamy in Tennessee is only a misdemeanor. Jones bond is set at $1,500.
